Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30. I had allready packed the car the night before. I left the house at around 5am and arrived in Ft. Collins at about 5:45. Gave Ben (Triforresttri) a call so we could hook up. Got to the Fort Collins Club and met with Ben right away. Ryan (himself) showed up a few minutes later. I must say that it was great to meet up with these guys. I was so nervous about this being my first tri. Hanging out with those guys made things alot easier, and calmed my nerves quit a bit.
Event warmup:

The three of us rode our bikes over to the Epic Center which is where the swim was going to be. I started way in the back because of my ultra slow swim abilities. I got exactly four swim workouts in before this tri. I was very nervous about that. I watched the other guys go and cheered them on a bit. I then found my plaace in line. I chatted with some of the other folks and felt relieved that I was not the only poor swimmer. The really cool thing was when we were standing around waiting for the swim leg to start, the anticipation in the building seemed so real and awesome. When that very first swimmer started and the tri began, everyone started cheering and freaking out. It was at that time I realized how cool these people are overall. Always cheering each other on. Always, right down to the last finisher. Simply awesome....

Comments:

Well I jumped in the water. Dipped under the lane to the start. The guy looks down and says, "Jonathan?". I said, "yup". 3, 2, 1, GO! Off I went. The swin was a total unknown factor for me. I had no clue how fast I was going to go. I was only able to swin freestyle for a total of 50 yards without stopping. Today I swam the first 75 yards all freestyle. I sidestroked a bit. I got passed by a few guys but I ended up passing like 8 or 9 people (I think).
Before I knew it I was on my last lap. Climed out of the pool and off to T1.
What would you do differently?:

I need to swim alot more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Took too long. My shirt got stuck on my head!! I ran out of the pool almost to my bike with my goggles still on! I am a dork!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe wear a tri top. Number belt too perhaps.
Bike
  • 37m 23s

  • 20.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Biking was a little new as well. I bought my bike two weeks ago. I found this leg to be a lot of fun. I passed some people. Got passed but not as much. I saw Ben starting his run and I yelled "lets go Ben!". Course seemed easy enough.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have gave a little more effort. Need more cycling fitness.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Better here. I came to a complete stop and then dismounted. Not to smooth but hey, it works for me. No b.s. this time. In and out. Almost ran with my helmet on.
What would you do differently?:

Dismount better.
Run
  • 24m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Oh man. I though my calf was gonna cramp. I have done very few bricks. It showed. I wanted to break an 8min pace and I did. That was the goal. I know I can improve though. I want to be at around 22 or 21 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

I need more work. More running, and speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Laying on the ground count? After about 15-20 minutes I started to feel normal, and I could not help thinking and talking about doing another one.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need more work. I need to get serious about eating right. I think I need to lose about 6-7 pounds. My run training has slacked of late. Work hard, work harder. I know I can improve.

Event comments:

I am glad have met Ben and Ryan. They are two of the coolest guys around. You guys take care and I hope to race with you again real soon.

WOOHOO I AM A TRIATHLETE!

Excellent report, Jon!!

Big time thanks for the encouragement when you saw me on the run. I was needing it.

It was great to meet ya. Hopefully we'll get to do it all again on September 11!!

BTW - For anyone who didn't know... Just for kicks, Jon did a 20 mile ride the day before the race. This may be his first race, but based on the big ol' smile he was wearing at the end of the run, I doubt it'll be his last.
