Team Mossman
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m 52s
Overall Rank = 451/566
Age Group = F 25-29
Age Group Rank = 23/34
Pre-race routine:

Got there at 4:45 (6:30 AM race start), after an hour-plus drive, to pick up my packet, which they warned would take an hour. It took about two minutes. So I had plenty of time to set up transition, go to the bathroom five times, and get in the water for a nice long warm-up. The 3 AM wake-up call was painful but I'm glad I was so early.

Also inflated my tires, which had not been inflated since I brought my bike into the shop for a repair in April. Oops! Guess I need to invest in a pump.
Event warmup:

Swam in the water with wetsuit on.
Swim
  • 20m 10s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

No panic attack! No backstroke! Success! Swim was nice and smooth- until the men caught up to me and I got run into a few times. But even that wasn't too bad. Swam pretty much in a straight line, sighting was more decent than I thought it'd be.

To compare to my last race:
Ironclad (5/30/10) swim time: 27:14

Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Good-

Ironclad (5/30/10) T1 time: 4:13
Bike
  • 45m 9s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 16.61 mile/hr
Comments:

A little hilly and many turns. I'm glad I didn't bother going up there to try out the course because they had to change it two days before the race due to unexpected road work.

Ironclad (5/30/10) bike time: 46:42
What would you do differently?:

Hills could've been better. I'm surprised this was only a tiny bit faster than Ironclad.

Also, bike computer didn't work. That would've been nice. I changed the batter in the computer, but I guess the sensor's battery needed to be changed too.

One more thing: nutrition/hydration could've been better. I had one Gu chomp and a few sips of water, but that was it.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Timing got messed up and most people's T2s didn't get recorded. I'd guess it was about 2 minutes, but I have no idea.

Ironclad (5/30/10) T2 time: 2:04
Run
  • 28m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

The sun was super hot at this point. Lower legs started seizing up- nooooo! I had to stop and walk three times. That was disappointing. Especially now that I look at my times- I definitely could have moved up a couple of places in my AG if I hadn't walked. But I was hurting- after we passed the boats in the marina and I ran out of things to look at, I started reciting the alphabet forwards and backwards over and over again to distract myself!

Oh well. Good sprint to the finish.

And compared to my last run time (at least four minutes slower), this was great! Those runs off the bike must have really helped.

Ironclad (5/30/10) run time: 32:34
What would you do differently?:

Not walk! Try to stretch out calves on the bike?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for 5-10 minutes, chugged a bottle of water. Got a massage. Ate a LOT (bread, pasta salad, peach, cashews). Had another bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hot sun. Crampy lower legs.

Event comments:

This was a really great race- tons of volunteers, cold water, amazing food (the warm bread and pasta salad blew away the usual bagels and orange slices- although they had those too). Volunteers were super friendly- including the massage therapists and the bike shop that was there to help. Not too many spectators, but I may have been more sensitive to that since nobody came to the race with me. Beautiful setting. Overall, totally worth the hour and ten minute drive.

Not sure if this includes T2 since that didn't record. If so, this would be about two minutes faster, which is way faster than I felt like I was going.

Great Race Emily ! Getting out of bed was the hardest part for me (and i didn't get up until 4:15am - 3am ouch!)

I'm wondering about the T2 time also. My run time seemed faster than it felt even if the T2 wasn't included.

Well Done

Good job Emily!

Thanks Laura! Babysitting all next weekend so I can't make next Saturday morning's ride, but hopefully I'll start up again weekend after that. But I'll do my long ride on Sunday late afternoon if you can't make the Saturday ride again and want to join me.
