Pre-race routine:

First race ever. Arrived 1.5 hours early. Ate a banana and piece of toast with gatorade before leaving. got to the race, checked in, set up transition had a cliff shot block and more gatorade then a gu just before start.
Event warmup:

stretching then very short run and got in the water for 5 min before starting.
Swim
  • 18m 10s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really need improvement here. I did the first quarter ok and then just completely tired out. I couldn't maintain breathing and ending up side stroking more than not. I was smart enough to start in the back, but it didnt matter. The crowd was not the issue
What would you do differently?:

GET BETTER AT SWIMMING
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I dont know my exact time here, my HRM wasn't cooperating and since it was my first race it was my last concern. I was beat from the swim so I slowed down a bit. The transition went smoothly though and i was out of the suit and onto my bike in good time
What would you do differently?:

Not be so dead after the swim!
Bike
  • 33m 21s
  • 10 miles
  • 17.99 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to get better at hills, but overall I was happy.
What would you do differently?:

Practice hills a bit more so I can keep my average up and get back to speed faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

again I dont know the time, but I had my shoes off and feet on shoes 50 yards before the line and jumped off the bike at a run. My transition area was far from the line but I was in my shoes quickly and on the move.
What would you do differently?:

I had a little trouble racking my bike again so I need to practice that. I think it was mostly because i was moving to fast.
Run
  • 23m
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

good run and was able to really push at the end. I need to get a little better with the hills, but otherwise I was happy
What would you do differently?:

not much, just keep doing bricks so I can keep my endurance up
Post race
Warm down:

met with the family, had some water and gatorade. Ate a bagel, then hung around for the awards. I felt pretty good after.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I stink at swimming!

Event comments:

First race so I dont have much to go by, but this seemed well done and they had a lot of fans and volunteers.

165 avg hrt. I had a slow start and the offroad section really slowed me down, especially the hills. I picked up the pace well otherwise though and ran on the pavement at at 7 min average which I was going for .
Course: pavement section had some steep downhills. The two brothers trail was a bit rough, people (not me thankfully) were falling and there were a few really tough hills.

Awesome job Chad and congrats on officially becoming a triathlete!  Those are some great splits for your first tri!  Yes, there is definitely some room for some improvement with your swimming, but like I keep saying, if you stick with it, it will get better, I promise!

I'm pretty bummed they didn't do the transition times and I would have really liked to have seen yours, but oh well.  It sounds like they went OK.

Keep up all the hard work and you're going to keep making dramatic improvements.  Way to go man!
