I'm planning to do a half Iron next year and I have it narrowed it down to 3 races.  First is Oliver in June Pros easy nice bike course Love Oliver and probably not as hot being early june.  Cons Really early in the race season and possible colder water.  Second race is Desert in July Pros are warm water and not bad time of the year being July. Cons Richter need I say more and Hot hot hot!!! Last Race is Lake Stevens Pros its in August giving me the most training time also being Ironman brand but also like outback brand too. and courses is moderate to hilly cons its a bit more expensive and its in the US and I like the Okanogon more to visit.  If anyone has any idea what race is best because I want to signup soon.  Also if anyone has good or bad things to say about all three races that would be appreciated.

Neil.

Oliver's race weather can vary. Some years have been during a down pour others have been mild with spotty rain and one year temps hit the high 30's! but this year has only been the first time the water temp has been "uncomfortably" cool. Most years the water is in the low 20's. It's a shallow lake and warms quickly. I wouldn't let that deter you from considering this race. I'm also guilty of being a little biased.

Osoyoos... no doubt about it, it's a tough race and temps are almost consistently in the 30's. If you're looking for a possible AG spot this race may be better suited as the entry numbers are much less. Just make sure you do a lot of hill training.
If you're looking for a fast time then Oliver is a better choice.

I HATE cold water and I found Oliver was ok in June.  A bit chilly to start but once I was swimming, I was fine.  I was in Osoyoos watching the Half in July and it was FREAKING hot. I was glad I wasn't racing....

If you really want to challenge yourself physically, and enjoy the heat, then do Osoyoos.

If you like bigger races, racing with all levels of athletes from pros to first timers, and don't mind unpredictable weather, do Oliver.

If you like some hills, want more time to train, or want the extra buzz of an Ironman branded event, then do Lake Stevens.

I've done all 3 and Osoyoos is my fav, but it's certainly not for everyone.

Glad I checked out this thread... as I'm planning on doing the Oliver Half next June... great to have additional insight into the course, weather, etc...

Was up that way for IMC last weekend as a volunteer... What an amazing experience!

Thanks for the insight I am still out of shape for a half and Oliver would win it for me hands down with one glaring exception the DATE its really early and that extra 2 months would really come in handy or even a month in the case of Osoyoos still haven't made up my mind but the date is hurting Oliver which would be the clear winner if given more time.

Neil...

Oliver is still 10 months away.. you've got a fair amount of time in hand to work up to the distance!! What is the most daunting distance aspect for you.. swim? bike? or run?!

Hey Guys (and girls),

Thx for the info.  This is the exact question I've been trying to figure out - Oliver vs. Osooyos.

I've been doing sprints and Olys for about 2 years and now its time to step it up a bit.  HIM looks like its the way to go for the next couple of years.

Not to bite off more than I can chew (we triathletes never do that do we ?) but is it unreasonable to do both ?  Family holidays/commitments may affect my ability to do Osoyoos, but in the event that I plan holidays around it, is there sufficient recover time ?  It's 5 weeks between events, that should be enuf time to recover/train ?  Thoughts ?  Anyone done both ?  Thx.

Very doable. There were a couple years I did both.

I basically took the week off after Oliver then picked up where I left off with training and built up to the Osoyoos date.

You might want to include hill training while working toward Oliver and not leave it all to the few weeks prior to Osoyoos though.

I was thinking of the Subaru Vancouver 1/2. Actually, I was thinking of buying the season's pass for all 5 races and doing a few 1/2s and then doing the other distances on the other races. Seems like a good deal, but I was surprised to see that no one else had mentioned it, favouring only the Osoyoos and Oliver races. Anything I should know about this other race series?
