First time post. Question on Max heart. Have come to a conclusion that my MHR on the run is 216? Am I nuts! or could this be true. I have ran several times and recorded the max after building up to max. It comes out to around 216. Any help appreciated.

My philosphy, which is clearly not scientific: your max heart rate = the highest number you've even seen. Duh.

Don't be confused by those charts that you see everywhere which just use a calculation of your age and some 220 number. That's such a rough estimate that I've never met anyone that it really fits.

My chart number tells me my max heart rate should be (220-35) 185. Phoey! That's not even close. The highest number I've ever seen was 199, in the finish chute at a race, while in an all-out sprint.

Through several years of training, I've determined that my lactic threshhold is roughly 175bpm. So, that's what I aim for during training runs. That's the point where I get the best workout for the least amount of muscle soreness.

Just curious, how do you feel during and after running at 216?

charts put my mhr at anywhere from 180 to 195. the chart at stevenscreek.com put me at 195 (http://www.stevenscreek.com/goodies/hr.shtml), which i think is pretty close. the highest i've seen it on my hrm was around 195. i was out for a trail run in a wisconsin state park. part of the park allowed hunting and as i was running i heard a gun go off, sounding like it was 10 feet away. running + fight or flight response = mhr.

Yeah, it's possible.  But, why worry what your max HR is?  You are not going to race and train at your max HR.  And the new training techniques use lactate threshold HR for calculating HR training zones.  Max HR for HR zones is 'old school'.

Search the forums.  The the topic has been discussed extensively here.
