IronMan Cozumel : Official Thread

Thanks.  I was going to wait until after my HIM (to see if I think I could do an IM) but I think I'm just going to roll the bones and sign up.    I think it will sell out faster this year as word has been getting around.

I just did IMAZ also.

I am flying into Cozumel so i don't have to deal with transportation from cancun to Coz (I am traveling with my bike).  The flight from California cost me around $500 round trip plus my whatever they charge me for my bike. 

I am staying on a bed and breakfast the first few nights at $75 a night for me and my wife and it is very closed to the race site. 

i like eating at smaller places so I don't think food is going to be much.  I speak the language so it should not be a big deal to eat at the small mom and pops restaurants

DO NOT stay in Cancun. 

I did Cozumel last year and LOVED it.  Fly directly into Cozumel if you can.  It will make things much more easy for you.  If you fly into Cancun you have to pay to get to Playa del Carmen.  They charged us about $10 per person plus they charged $10 for the bike to ride the bus.  The bus is the cheapest that we found but you have to take the bus all the way at the end of the bus lines.  Then you have to pay for the ferry ride to the island.  That was another $20 or so, I don't remember.  Depending on the time you get there it could take you 2 extra hours to get from Cancun to Cozumel.  If I do Cozumel again I will pay the extra money to fly directly into Cozumel. 

Do what MrSolis is doing with staying in a bed and breakfast and eat local.  At first the all inclusive sounds good but the food gets old real quick.  The upside to staying in the all inclusive is you will be around many other triathletes.

Have fun and get out and enjoy the island.  Even go to the mainland and go see the ruins but rent a car for this instead of doing the bus tours.  Having a rental was great because we could stay at places for as long as we wanted.  We read how we shouldn't rent a car in Mexico, Mexico is not safe, blah blah blah.  We stayed for a week after the race and we got out and did as much on our own as we could and had a blast.  Not once did I ever feel like we were in danger.

To anyone considering this race DO IT.  It is the most spectator friendly race I've ever done and the locals are so happy to have you there.  I felt like a pro coming into town with everyone yelling "vamos vamos vamos".  I promoised my wife long races every other year but if she said I could do Cozumel again I would be all over it.

I don't remember how I found it but I found a Bed and breakfast close to the start area and then I looked for reviews on Tripadvisor.com.  You can start on Tripadvisor.com and find different options that work for you. I also found some reviews for hotels there that were helpfull

I know that they have plenty of Cozumel condos available for rent at a pretty cheap price compared to the resorts!  There's a grocery store, Mega, on the main road in downtown.  It's like a Super Wal-Mart so you can pretty much get anything you need to cook meals.  It's an awesome store!

There is a bike transportation service going for US to Cozumel. I know nothing about the company but know bringing bikes to Cozumel can be a challenge.
