Subject: life jacket during swim
My first triathlon is next weekend. I have a seizure disorder which is the main reason I haven't done it before. But I have decided I will no longer let it stop me. My big concern (Or more acurrately, my family's) is the swim. Has anyone seen anyone wearing a life jacket during the swim. I am looking for the super super thin type and am wondering if anyone knows of a good one and where to find it. Thanks, this forum has been great for questions.

You mean something like these? They inflate by pulling a cord but I'm not sure if you had any problems you'd be able to

Here's some other styles

As a race director, I would try to work with you, but I would make sure that they know of your medical situation. Yes you will sign a waiver and be covered by insurance, but I would still want to make sure that you were taken care of.  I really think as previously posted that you would want to worry about the bike.  Good luck in your race!

I would suggest that you might want to contact the race director ahead of time and let them know about your condition. Life jackets & floatation devices aren't technically legal, but they may be able to make some special accomodation for your condition. I've been at races where a physically challenged competitor raced with a designated partner or "buddy" who looked out for them. Better to discuss it ahead of time with the organizers than to try to protest a DQ after the fact.
Hope it works out for you. I admire your courage and commitment.
Good luck,
Mark

Thanks for your reply. I guess you would call me slightly nuts! I do worry some about the bike, but falling off will scrape me up but probably won't kill me. I didn't know that wearing a life vest makes you DQ. I think I will take your advice and call the director and bring them up to speed. Thanks again.

Jeldredge,

I admire you for not letting your medical condition hold you down! As has been stated explain it all with the race director. If that race won't acommidate you I'd look for one that would. PLEASE let us know how it goes as you will be an inspration to many of us!

Two suggestions:

Contact the race director... chances are that something can be worked out...

Second, look for a pool swim triathlon.

I'm a former whitewater kayaker and thought of this new shirt/flotation when I read your message. I've seen/felt it in person, pretty cool, form fitting, might be easier to swim in than a life jacket which would be hard to keep from riding up. Possibly you could wear this under your wetsuit (if you're wearing one). It's called the NRS Anti-Gravity Shirt in case the website doesn't work. You can get them at most paddling shops or have it shipped. Good luck in your race!!!

I've read on another board that some races have a special category for people with medical conditions or disabilities.  Might be worth asking about

I admire your courage so much!  It takes a TON of character to step up and rise above your challenges.  So many pople would sit back and say "I can't", but not you.  Keep going, and don't give up!!!
