Nothing - just thought the Xtians had a thread for themselves so I would start one for us - or maybe just me.

2 Atheist points to the clever infidel who can correctly identify the historical significance of the expression "We got mittens too."

Kind of a lame joke but I like it:

A young lady came home from a date, rather sad. She told her mother, "Anthony proposed to me an hour ago." "Then why are you so sad?" her mother asked. "Because he also told me he is an atheist. Mom, he doesnt even believe theres a Hell." Her mother replied, "Marry him anyway. Between the two of us, well show him how wrong he is."

World War One story, quite possibly apocryphal -- Tommys making fun of the German phrase, "Gott Mitt Uns (sp?)" (God is with us).

Haven't heard that one in a while, but it's still a good story . . .

The title of this thread brings to mind a question I always ask myself.

Am I an Atheist?

I don't believe in a literal God. Does that make me an atheist?

Don't they have an entire Aethiest Bible or book or something?

I feel very comfortable in my life with the belief that we have evolved into what we are today and that there is nothing guiding or watching over us.

It is actually very liberating.

One of my favorite songs, by John Lennon.

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

I believe there is only Love and Fear, and all the various forms and distortions that emanate from those 2 things.

I believe in a Creative force in the universe but I cannot say what it is, where it is (other than everywhere) or that it needs anything from us. I do not believe in an anthropomorphic god.

Worldviews, lifeviews, faith - whatever you want to call it - they are intensely personal issues and I respect that each one of us has to choose for him or herself the view that gives them a sense of where they belong in the universe.

I received an email from Beliefnet.com this morning; thought I'd share it as it is topical. I receive their Daily Buddhist Wisdom (quotes) so I'm not sure why they thought I would be their target market.

what if no one's watching
what if when we're dead
we are just dead
what if it's just us down here
what if god is just an idea
someone put in your head

and i think,
what if no one's watching
what it when we're dead, we are just dead
what if it's just us down here
what if god ain't looking down
what if he's looking up instead

-Ani DiFranco

Just a thought. Although I consider myself agnostic and not aetheist. I feel religion puts god in a box. It is an institution created by man afraid of the unknown.

What if?

Take a look at the bloody last century to see what if.

Nietzsche declared God dead and we ended up with Hitler's cute little experiment in the "will to power".

Marx declared religion to be the opiate of the masses and we ended up with the "liberating" system of communist totalitarianism and the gulag.

I use to be an atheist, but these attempts to create a world without God contributed to my doubts.

Despotism and ruling madmen are not modern inventions. They are as old as the hills; men have always had dark hearts. I don't see modernism as the catalyst for our modern day atrocities. Look at the Taliban Afghanistan - devout men creating an oppressive, cruel society. I don't blame religion for their despotism - I blame the men who, fearing a cultural attack on their mythos, sought to eliminate all logos by shoving their belief system down the throats of every citizen (or exterminate the nonbelievers). Nor do I blame lack of religion for the despotism of the 20th century. I see no causal connection. I see the oldest story of man - dark hearts with power.

I am finally reading a book I purchased about 3 years ago by one of my favorite non-fiction writers, Karen Armstrong (The Battle for God). Karen makes the argument for needing both mythos and logos in our lives. It's a great read. I highly recommend it (along with her other books).

Seems to me that most people need something to codify their sense of morality.  Go to the extreme on either end and you breed intolerance, leading to "very bad things".  Pick the fundamentalist view of your choice as the rebuttal.

The Bible was written by man.
The Koran was written by man.
Siddhartha was a man.
Thats all I'm saying. Man defining god.

Heard on the news this morning that Tom Delay was preaching freedom of religion to 3000 baptists, and got all pissed that the Supreme Court doesn't allow the 10 commandments in front of a courthouse.

We're not all baptists.

What about my freedom of NO religion?

I'm not out to be tyrannical like some folks. A healthy compromise would be just fine with me. But apparently for these 3000 baptists, it's all or none. And that makes me very sad. Whatever happened to love your (gay, lesbian, had an abortion, had sex before marriage, has different religios or non religious fews) neighbor?

Siddhartha was a man. Thats all I'm saying. Man defining god.

That's all he claimed to be - a man. Siddhartha never claimed to be a god; nor did he promote a supernatural belief system. In fact, Siddhartha didn't define god at all.
