Comments: Took this one out at a reasonable pace and got absolutely dropped in the first 600m or so. A pack of 5 or so very quickly opened up a gap and by a half mile in were free and clear. Went through mile one in a very controlled 5:48. I wanted to keep the first bit easier, as i normally am a fast starter but after yesterday i was not sure how the legs would respond and planned on picking it up further in or just keeping steady if i felt beat down. just past the first mile two guys dropped off the main pack (their opening 5:11 mile was apparently a bit much......). At mile 2 I caught up with the guys still in front, and all but one quickly dropped off. We ran together to the turn around side by side, and hit 5k in 17:53. Around the turn and he put in a surge but i quickly reeled him back in. From there we started trading punches, he'd surge a bit, then i would, neither of us could get more than 10 feet or so on the other. Every time i tried to pick it up the legs really had nothing else to give. I was ok running steady at that pace, but nothing extra. After the bridge both of our paces slowed a decent amount in the headwind, and the rain picked up there. At i mile to go i picked it up again, opened up 10 feet again, and could not get further. Through all of this i did my best whenever we were next to each other to stay a step or two ahead so i could easily cover his surges, it gave me an extra step or so to get moving if he went. At 1200 to go he went, and i pulled him back. at 800 we both tried and nothing happened. at 400 to go we both picked it up, and each of us, him, then me, put in a surge. again nothing. the last 200 were flat out, and he moved ahead with 70 or so meters to go. at the last 30 i gained a step or two on him, and hung on to finish two tenths in front of him. What would you do differently?: Not race the day before? Outside of that, i was happy with how things are going. it was a well played and paced race on my part, and i've never been a strong finisher in running so this was a huge confidence boost. Post race
Warm down: easy half mile cool down. What limited your ability to perform faster: yesterday. Last updated: 2011-03-06 12:00 AM

2nd race of a double header weekend (might as well start the season off with a big weekend right?!)
Got there early to help out a bit. The race company is a club my team helps out/works with for a lot of bigger events
Got in around 2 miles total of easy running plus strides over the 30 min leading up to the race. Legs actually felt alright, a bit sore but nothing too bad.
