Subject: Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains : Official Thread

So I figured we'd start an Official Training thread as the only other thread is buried in the Pennsylvania state forum.

Swim map was just posted, and it looks a wee-bit short.

I could be wrong....but the swim appears to be mostly with the current with about a 1/2 mile run into transition.  Interesting set-up.  Maybe the map isn't sized properly??

WTH?  I just mapped it on Map My Run, .41 miles from shoreline to shoreline.

http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/29285904

Even extending it out to the transition area, if you want to count that, got like .7 mi

Could they missing a leg or something?

Yeah, this was my concern.  That is NOT 1.2 miles.  And if we were to swim 2 loops, the run out of the water and then back in would be a half mile!! In a wetsuit!!! Hmmmm....  Regardless, the run BACK TO transition is going to be long.

And my guess is this is going to be a NYC Triathlon-like swim (one-way, with the current only) so there will be many swim times well under 30 minutes.  I'm going to start an 'Official Training' thread too, so we can just click on the link in our blog and be brought to a page instead of having to dig into this page.

Thanks for starting the thread.  I understand the desire to have the swim with the current but the run into T1 looks like it may be a doozy.

Everything looks pretty good but this run to transition is sketchy. There has to be some kind of explanation. Although I'm hoping to open up with a great swim so with the current will just make it that much faster lol. Hoping for top 5 out of water

On the Pocono 70.3 facebook page, a slew of people have questioned the swim distance (as per the current map) and the Race Organizers have yet to respond.

My guess is we are going to swim upstream for a 1/4 mile, then right hand turn, and then swim all the way down stream (wheeeeeeee!!) which should be fun.   This could be a Swim PR course for sure.  But as it stands now, there is just no way the Map is right.

When i saw the race map at the philly expo it didnt look like the one posted on the website! It was more of a trapizoid where like you said you swim upstream a little then around a bouy and back down then around a bouy and slightly back upstream towards the shore. I dont beleive the ones online are very accurate. I wish I would have taken a picture of the ones from the expo they had the run bike and swim all mapped out and with elevations!

AHA!  The race director's have responded via Facebook comment section (yes, I really need to get a life!! lmao!!)

Hey everyone! The swim map gives you a general sense of the course (1 loop, point to point). It is not to scale. It will feature a few areas that jut out to fully account for the full 1.2 miles. We’ll be on the water once again in a few weeks refining the course and we’ll let you know of any tweaks to the course. Thanks again for your passion and interest!

Hmmmm.... a 'general sense'.   Again, my guess is they will have us swim upstream from the start for a 1/4 mile.  Unless they intend to have the swim course look like this /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/   We could zig zag around bouys?  I kid of course

This race is maybe for me, a lot of it hinges on how Timberman goes. Does anyone have an idea of the climbing on the bike? I imagine there will be a fair amount of climbing (which is fantastic!). I haven't been on the race site in a while so forgive me if all the answers are there.

Hey Matt.  I've heard the race is about 3/4's full already, so my guess is it will definitely be sold out before August.  Word is there is supposed to be some really good climbs on the bike

It's an inagural event, so nobody knows much about it.  Having said that, the Run is the last half of the Pocono Marathon course.  So when you click on this link ( http://www.poconomarathon.org/courseinfo.html  and look at the elevation map, picture the START at Mile 26, the turn-around at around mile 19, and then back to the finish (out & back).  So figure the first 6.5 miles will be gradually up, and then the last half down.  Sorry if that's confusing.  Basically it's an out & back run utilizing the very end of the Pocono Marathon course, at least this is my understanding.

Some people have mentioned concerns over T1 and T2 being approx 10 miles apart.  I can just say, I did Ironman Rhode Island 70.3 in it's inagural year, and T1 and T2 were literally 56 miles apart, and I encountered zero problems.  And everyone I knew and all the Race Reports I read, nobody had any major issues.  With separate transitions, the 'Athlete Guide' will have clear instructions on what to do.  More than likely, as we did in Rhode Island, you pick up your Race Packet on Friday or Saturday.  Saturday morning or afternoon, you drop your bike off at T1 and then drop your Run stuff (in a marked transition bag) off at T2.  Sunday morning you bring your nutrition for the bike, helmet and shoes, wetsuit, cap, goggles and timing chip (of course!).  You jump on your bike, crush 56 miles of hills (or they crush you ), jump off the bike at T2 and voila! your Run Bag is where you left it.  Rack your bike and rip open the bag and get your shoes, visor and anything else on you left in the bag.

This is how they did it at other Ironman split transition events, so I'd imagine that's how they'll do it here.  Regardless, it will all be spelt out for us clearly in the 'Athlete Guide' which is normally released a month before the race online.

As for the Swim, it looks to be a fast swim with the current.  As for the Bike, get ready for some hills!!  My "pure guess" is that we'll be looking at a minimum of 3500 to 4000 feet of elevation over 56 miles with some tough long climbs, and some wicked fast descents.

To add to the other details...the Poconos are a neat place.  In early October we may get some nice Fall foliage to distriact you from the hills on the bike.  T2 and the finish will be in downtown Stroudsburg which a somewhat cool little downtown.  There are a few good bars and restaurants along Main Street so there are opportunities for family/friends to get some food and drink.  More importantly post race beers for you.

There are a ton of lodging options in the area.  I've stayed at the 'host' hotel before.  Its nothing special.  I booked a villa at nearby Shawnee since I'll have the wife and 3 kids in tow.

In short, the area is really pretty.  The course should be awesome.  The weather may stink.  Should be fun

Don't ask me why I am obsessed with the swim.  I'm not quite sure.  And this took less than 10 minutes to whip up.  And I know the Race Directors said on the facebook comments page that the swim course is just a basic representation of what the swim will look like, it's not exact.  But for shitts and giggles, I mapped what the exact course would be as they have it currently presented -- and it comes in at a whopping .48 miles.  The picture below is what realistically the actual course may look like.  My concern is the size of the waves.  Seeing as I'm in the male 35-39 (one of the larger waves statistically at 70.3's) and there seems to be a few shallow spots.  HOWEVER, I measured the the starting line at Mirror Lake (Ironman Lake Placid) where approximately 2700 people line up to start, and -- believe it or not -- the entire width of that starting line is .05 of a mile.  HALF the width of this river!  So it looks like (especially with the wave start) we should have more than enough room.  These numbers put me a little more ease.

For reference, here is the swim map illustration as of March 11th: http://www.ironmanpoconomountains.com/sites/default/maps/swim2011.pdf

The diagram they posted doesn't show it, but it does say "1 loop" at the bottom, which I took to mean you'll actually do 1.5 laps of the course (downstream->upstream->downstream), which would get you pretty close to 1.2.

Planning to do my first HIM at Pocono this year and I'm happy for having found this thread.

How easy is to get around the area without a car (especially given that T1 != T2)? Are there buses provided? The distances seem quite large.

Thanks!

At the Broad Street Expo the other weekend I spoke to the race director and was told that there will be a bus to get us from T1 to T2 to set-up.  They want us to set-up our transitions on Sat, BTW, due to the distance between the transitions.  He was also telling me they are working on setting up a system where folks will take transport our T1 stuff to the finish for us.

I was more interested in the illusive bike course at the time, and given a vague about 1 month away reply...
