Subject: Has anyone ever gotten a technical masters online?

I was thinking of trying to brush back up on my engineering.  I've forgotten just about all of it during my piloting years.  I remember words like integral and derivative, but couldn't tell you what to do with them.  I realize my first step is to review all my notes from college (yeah, I still have all those), but my motivating factor would be to maybe get a second technical masters degree to brush up my resume a bit.  I can't get out of the Air Force YET, but someday I will!

After getting a technical masters in residence, the idea of doing one online is scary.  But I think with enough study it could be done.  So I've pretty much convinced myself I want to start working in that direction.

My question is, does anyone have personal experience with this?  Recommend any programs?  I was hoping to stick with some bigger names.  In other words, I'm not just doing it to check the box...I want to learn something and have a piece of paper that will hold some clout, not a fly-by-night org that takes your money and hands you a degree.

I'm tossing around Math, Mechanical Engineering, or something along those lines.  Sadly I think I will get stuck having to take the GRE again even though I already possess one masters, though I think it's worth asking if a school would waive that requirement.

Any advice appreciated.  I've been out of the school loop a LONG time!

You are the Matlab master from MIT if I recall.  Of course, Georgia Tech has been doing the distance learning for at least 12 years.  They have the kinks worked out.

I was the online teaching assistant for a couple of classes that my major professor taught.  The distance people had a harder time of it than on campus students.  On campus students learn a lot from studying with other people.  You have to dig it all out for yourself when you are a distance student.  It is not impossible for a well-prepared motivated student.  With your background, I would suspect that you do not have any glaring educational weaknesses to overcome, particularly if you stayed with ME or AE.

The only other obstacle is having the time.  The course work at Georgia Tech is known not so much for its difficulty but its volume.  You will need to be sure that you can devote the time over the period of a semester to do the homework.  You cannot let it slide for a couple of weeks and then catch up at the end like you guys at MIT used to do .

That's very helpful.  I hadn't seen Georgia Tech in my google searches.  Good to know.

I do anticipate the solitary nature being the hardest part for me.  I got a LOT of help from my friends at MIT.  One of the programs said that the professors have office hours for the distance learning students.  But I imagine that it's hard to give technical help over phone/internet.

As for glaring educational weaknesses...that would be the fact that I haven't thought about engineering since turning in my thesis in June of 2003.  Seriously.  My engineering skills are buried under a LOT of dust.  I actually thought about maybe auditing some classes this fall just to remember a bit before trying to take a class.

I really wish I could convince the AF to send me back full time.  I'm a much better student when it's the only thing I'm doing.  But since that probably won't happen I will have to find another way!

Here's the link to the program at my Alma Mater, Purdue:

Don't know anyone who has done an engineering MS, but know some who have done their MBA through Purdue's Krannert Management school.

As others have mentioned, these distance-learning programs require quite a bit of self-discipline.  Any 'name' program is going to take some hard work and commitment.

Good luck,
