Pre-race routine:

Um, get dressed really fast and drive hell-for-leather from work to the 6 PM race start! Nutrition wasn't stellar this day, either. Could have used some carbs in the afternoon.
Event warmup:

A 200-yard jog from car to registration, and a few minutes of stretching.

Comments:

This is a fun, hometown sort of run, one of two big 10Ks in the area. There are some really excellent runners in this race; the top five finishers were all 33:00 or lower! I started at the back of the pack, and passed quite a few people during the first 3 miles of the race as they settled into a slower pace. My first mile time was 9:03, easily one of my better miles to date. Halfway-point split was 28:16, and total time 55:58, so I did run a negative split. Everything up to mile 4 was great; I started to tire at about 4.5, and the last mile was rough. Thought I had saved enough energy, but perhaps not. Was overtaken by a guy who drafted me the entire last mile, and I just couldn't pull enough out to pass him.
What would you do differently?:

This isn't a distance I have trained on, very much. A few of my LSDs over the summer have been 6 or 7 miles, but at slower paces. So I suppose I could train speed more, and continue to go long. But this is my first 10K and I'm pretty happy with my times!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for several minutes, cooled off, stretched some.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

LAck of training to this distance.

Event comments:

T-shirts were only for placing finishers...that's a bummer for a $19 race. Even the little local 5Ks give you a darn shirt for your effort! However, there was low-carb beer, free for racers. That I enjoyed. Runners and their beer!

Awesome race, Michelle!  Great pace!  Ain't negative splits just about the most wonderful thing in the world??
