Subject: Does anyone train for the wrong reasons?
Before I start, I need to let people know that I LOVE TO TRAIN! but, I love my large self at the same time.
Basically, I am hearing from everyone all there testimonials about how they train for their families or to live longer or blah blah blah.
Does anyone train because they are mad or stubborn or because they feel guilty?
Yes, this is me and I know this, but I have always worked out because I was large as a kid and and as a teen and as an adult, but have always lost weight because of someone else.

Vanity. I train, partly, because I want to look good. Is that bad? Oh, and I want to be healthy too.

yeah I mean, we talk about doing this sport for selfish reasons. I love being able to label myself a triathlete, and I train partially so that people look at me and say "I couldn't do that". I take pride in doing something that most people cant/wont.

Well sure. You all kno about my irritation and aggravation with my ex training partner. Right now I am pushing hard to finish before him in my sprint on 9/11. I'll be OK if I don't and I would never tell anyone I beat them, ever but it would be nice to pass him and get a good time too.

Sometimes I go out and workout cause my butt is too big too. I love myself except for several inches of ass.

Not to sound self centered, but I train just for me. The daily rigors and challenges of training are what I really look forward too. To continually push and improve myself is the ultimate goal.

When I decided to train for a tri a few months ago there were two main reasons

1. I felt I needed a challenge in my life and missed those days of training hard for a competiton

2. I wanted people to see me progress and think "wow, it takes someone special to do what he is doing"

As my training progresses my first reason is still valid but I have noticed that most people around me have no clue what it takes to seriously train for a sport like Tri. I am tired of people saying "so did you win?"....or "A sprint, that's the easy one right?"

I now am realizing that the only way you can succeed in this is to do it for yourself. Obviously I love to hear how proud my parents and GF are of me but at the end of the day, when I am at km 8 of my run, no one is looking. I am the only one who truly knows the time and effort I have put into it.

One day, I will tell my children what I have done, just like my dad told me about his sub three hour marathon days and then....I will pass the torch.

Ok......I have to be truthful, I am also starting to see a six pack...that's seriously cool too.

You want dark motivations? I suspect - although it's a hard thing to admit, even to myself - that I train because I am at heart angry at the world, and losing myself in the moment is the only way to find any peace.

I enjoy the way tri training has made me look in my underwear and naked. I'm no longer afraid to walk around in a swim suit at work...except maybe that tan line from my bike shorts. I've FINALLY lost those saddle bags, and I can actually use and see my ab muscles. When a former coworker says "holy hell you got hot!" (guy i coached with last year)...that's why I train. Being able to saunter into a party in a tight shirt with low-rise jeans and not look like a sausage casing is an AMAZING feeling for someone who was the "fat girl" through high school...that's why I train, because, damnit, I'm hot.

At work? Oh, you are a lifeguard at the Y.. Gotcha.. Nevermind.

Yeah, I love checking myself out in my undies too, to guage my progress. I grew up a fat girl and training is my way to give the people who have bullied a big F you. Yes, I am bitter like that.

You'd better at least come here and tell us you beat the living daylights out of that guy!

I'm training right now because I want to do well and prove to myself that it's not too hard.  I made my BF bring home his medal from last year's Pacific Grove race and it's hanging next to the TV so I can see it from my trainer.  Funny, but a woman in my lane tonight at swim class was wearing her PG swim cap from last year.  It seems the Universe has picked up on my latest motivational stunt and is carrying it through for me.

It is the best way to be alone with my thoughts. I get cranky if I don't train mostly because I miss the time to myself. No kids, no wife, no work. When I am running or biking or swimming I am alone which probably explains the penchant for ultra marathons

Been thinking about this post. I am not sure pride in your appearance is a "wrong reason". NOt every day is going to be a mental, emotional and spiritual high. We are not always going to be our best selves. Why is wanting to look good now considered so negative and selfish? If you feel good about how you look in a bathing suit (wish I did) there is NOTHING wrong with that. Maybe you should not train to the point where you are all alone and don't see the people that love you but thinking you are selfish for wanthing a 6 pack is really, imo, not that selfish. We tell ourselves that too fat is bad but somehow now have the idea that too fit is vain.

Dude unless it is workout clothes dump the lycra. Lycra is just bad on all levels unless you butt is on a bike or in a tri! Tight jeans on the other hand...

JeepFleeb - 2005-08-24 8:49 PM I train because I'm addicted to racing and the harder I train the more races I can run.  I can't get enough of that nervous excitement before a race, that horrible pain in my quads at the 24th mile of a marathon, or the adrenaline rush and utter relief when I cross a finish line.  I'm the first to admit that I'm a junkie, but at least my drug makes me look good naked.
.

This pretty much describes me too. However, my obsession was fueled by a breakup and I threw myself into it obsessively to "run away" from being bored or sad. I train because I can say I'm an athelete, and bragging rights and I look pretty good now too. I like being the wierd one because I keep trying to see how far I can push myself, oh, and going to bed at 9 on Fridays and Saturdays because of pre 5am wakeups for training.

Training to look good naked, or in bodymarking is important too.

So, I dont think those reasons are wrong like you say, just maybe selfish, and I don't have a problem with that.

Sometimes when I'm bored at the gym I have a fantasy about a married guy I've had a crush on for 5 years. In it, his wife bails on him and leves him broken hearted and I'm there to pick up the peices! And he's gonna love it 'cause I'm all hard-bodied, and have such great stamina and I'm so flexible in ways his wife never ever was! Then, after our monster lovemaking sessions, we'd go for runs together. He'd lose his beer belly and become the truly magnifcent specimen I know is hiding in there, and we'd start doing tri's together, and we'd ride off happliy ever after.

I also love looking at my legs in the shower with the water running down my buffed out calfs...big ego boost.

The good reasons, health, personal challenge, positive example for kids, etc. etc.

The "wrong" resons

- vanity - I want to look good nekkid

- ego - I love people's reaction when I tell them what I'm doing. They think I am much more studly that is actually the case

- selfishness - workout time is "me" time.

Whoa! You should contribute to the soap oprea thread, or maybe write a romance novel. (I'm picturing a romance novel cover with the Hero & Heroine wearing spandex and body markings instead of the usual billowing bodices.)

I don't believe there can be a wrong reason for training. Our bodies were meant to be in motion; ain't no thang if we need extra motivation to drive us to get in motion.

Mmm, body markings. Maybe the heroine could be wearing a bodice: just have it unlaced enough to show off her cut abs!

I train for myself. I race for myself and a little for my wife--she really enjoys watching me!

But, I'm going back to night school--starting on my Masters-- for her as, after just finishing my BGS after 4 years, I really don't have the desire to go back right now. And knowing that it will have an impact on my training/racing is causing me a problem, even though I haven't said anything to her.

When I originally told her I was thinking about not going back, she threw a fit and we had just about the worst fight we've ever had--and we don't fight much at all. I know... WAY MORE than you wanted to hear... Sorry... But thanks for letting me vent!

Well, I am training because I am angry with my Significant Other. She gave me a contract! To lose weight or lose weight.
I trained last year and was about 4 weeks away from my first Sprint and she pulled the, "I don't see you enough routine and are you cheating?".
I know she has issues, but this is the reason why I am training.
Well, I am at the club training and will complete my first Sprint next spring as for the latter I never have, but I am pretty hurt....
Yep, venting and Thanks for all the honest answers, I knew I wasn't the only one training for the wrong reasons.
Oh, by the way, I love tweenkies, cheeseburgers and biggulps, yeah!!! I can't wait to look good in my without my shirt on. I guess a six pack looks better than a KEG and two pony kegs in the back.
