Subject: To Taper or NOT to Taper.....
Hey Everyone,  Just a quick question for all of you.  I was undecided about a race coming up this weekend (July 23) and as such had not been sticking to my training plan due to other commitments and a bit of a lack of focus.  I'm not afraid that I won't be able to complete the race (sprint distance) but am wondering now if I should be tapering this week or, because I have missed some key workouts, use this week as an active recovery type week and hit the race that way...

i say do it. but if you really havent been missing your key workouts or most of them, no need to REALLY taper. Adjust as needed.

I would say for you to just take it easy the day before the race, and don't overreach in a workout after wednesday.

The question isn't relevant, because the purpose of a taper is recovery and to allow your body to supercompensate for a training load. You said you haven't been training much, so there's not a training load to absorb. Just don't try to impose a training load this week, because it's too late, and all you'll accomplish is hurting your performance. Don't worry about it. Just go race and have fun.

Generally speaking there is no real need for a taper prior to a sprint distance race anyway.  The race itself will probably be shorter and less grueling than most of your workouts.

Like others said though, dont push yourself too hard the last few days to try to make up for missed workouts.  Just go through the week with a standard level of intensity and focus.

I disagree with this statement, as a blanket statement at least.

For many people, a taper of a week or more is probably counterproductive, mostly because they LACK intensity and volume that a longer taper is supposed to help with.

That being said, I think that even a 5K race could have a taper, if it's your important race. Maybe that taper is only a day or two, but even a week of reduced volume with high intensity would be appropriate for a 5K.

x2. The length of the race does not determine the taper. The amount of accumulated training load does. Competitive swimmers will taper for a 50 meter race.
