Overcast
Total Time = 6h 03m 10s
Overall Rank = 87/235
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 15/36
Pre-race routine:

We stayed in the host hotel in Arlington, just my wife and I (she did this race too and cut 44 minutes off her previous 1/2 IM time). No kids (they stayed at mother-in-laws). So we got a good meal the night before and a good night sleep.

Breakfast: Banana, PB on a bagel and some OJ

Got to the park about 1 1/2 before the race, plenty of time to get setup, marked and chipped.
Event warmup:

Got in the water and swam a few minutes.
Swim
  • 49m 30s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm satisfied with the swim, I navigated good and wasn't the last in my age-group. I was clear of getting clobbered too much from the waves that started behind me.
Transition 1
  • 04m 5s
Comments:

Not too fast, but I wanted to make sure that I didn't forget anything. I had a check list and that worked good for me.
What would you do differently?:

More organization.
Bike
  • 3h 03m 14s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.34 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a good ride, I stuck to the nutrition plan - drained Camelbak of Gatoraid at about mile 50 and I had picked up a Gatoraid at one of the handouts. I eat 3 PowerGels, 2 salt tables and one PowerBar.
What would you do differently?:

I opened my PowerBar and put it in the BentoBox without the wrapper before the swim. It was stuck to the PowerGels - not a good idea. I won't be doing that again.
Transition 2
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Kind of slow, but OK
Run
  • 2h 03m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I had to run a 2 hour 1/2 marathon to make the sub-6 time for the event. I kept the pace up till mile 11 and then fell off the wagon.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked round, got some Gatoraid, Pizza and waited for Tammy to come through.

Two of things: I didn't cramp at all, which has been a problem for the in the past two races (1/2 IM in Galveston and Oly in Irving). I took the lava salts, eat bananas and made sure I drank enough to stay hydrated. Of course it was much cooler today than it was in July, but I hope the nutrition was the reason.

Also:
I TOOK 4 MINUTES OFF MY PRIOR 1/2 IM!!!!

Event comments:

This race was run very well. And I'll probably plan on doing it again.

Holy fabulous, Batman!  GREAT job!  Bummer just missing 6 hours...but goal for next time, right?

Sorry I missed you...so crazy at the start I didn't see anyone but Aaron (he was easy to spot all day...flag and all).

Nice race. Looks like we will be racing against each other in the future. Today was my last race in 30-34 division. That was an awesome run to get close to 6 hours. I tried the same thing but hit the wall at mile 10.

Congrats! Your times indicate that today was, in fact, your day.

Was this your 'A' race? Do you have any more planned for this season?

Actually I have one triathlon left:  September 24th - Redman Iron Distance.   It will be my first iron-distance, so we'll see how it goes.

Man I am jealous. I wanted to do Redman Iron Distance because it is on my 35th birthday. But my wife will be about 8 months pregnant at that point. No condition to travel and especially wait around for someone doing an ironman. She really wants to be there when I do my first Iron distance race so I am putting it off until next year. Good luck. I will be watching for the race report.
