and isn;t miso soup about the most perfect food in the world? I can get my coffee travel mug filled with miso soup for less than what it costs to fill it with coffee... and it has great protein and is so satisfying. I might even market a new idea: The Miso Diet. You have to have a trough of miso soup every day and for dessert? sushi of course, unagi, mmmmmm.

I had sushi samples at a whole foods grocery today. Love it. Would eat it more often if I could afford it. Yum!

The trick to getting around the cost is to make it yourself. It is really pretty easy once you get the hang of it and you can customize it with your favorite types of veggies and even fish.

And how do you get the hang of it--I can't imagine how you even get started? Any good self-sushi websites?

I like sushi, not too much of the raw stuff though.  Unagi and Ebi are the good ones    Miso soup tastes good but too much Na.  Makes me thirsty.

Sushi is the best. I think I could eat it for every meal and not get sick of it. Maybe that self made sushi is worth looking into... hmm...

Mmmmm, sushi. Maguro, unagi, hamachi--bring it on!  Here's a beautiful thing: a sushi place in Raleigh that has $1 a piece nights.  Granted I have to drive three hours to get there, but YES! (I only go when I have legitimate work/other plans, I promise).

I made my own when I lived in Rhode Island and knew what fish I was getting. The rice is tricky, and rolling the rolls with the little bamboo mat takes some practice, but it was great. Of course, real sushi chefs study the cut of the fish for years, but hey, I'm no aficionado, I just like the stuff.

Best hamachi I've ever had was in a hole-in-the-wall in Seattle. In fact, that place makes Nobu in NYC 2nd place, in my books. I've taken Sushi 101 and 201 but still find myself getting take-out at the local Japanese resto on my way home.

Damn. Now I'm having a craving for yet another spider roll.

I have a wonderful friend/coworker who trained me in the finer art of making sushi. Although we are mechanics, we often find ourselves cooking for large parties (retirement, promotion, etc) at work, and my indoctrination was making about 80 california rolls one afternoon. It doesn't seem so scary any more, I have even passed along the skill to my teenaged son. I still have my favorite little sushi place up the street, but being able to roll my own, so to speak, helps out with the budget. Anyhow, there are some great books out there and some good web sites. And even if the first few don't look great, the mistakes aren't too tough to swallow.

Haven't had sushi in like 3 months. Boy I need to get out. The best is to try to find places with half price sushi. Oh man its great. Going to have to look into the self made sushi also. Sashami is great also. I prefer it more.

SUSHI!   Tomorrow night is $1 sushi night, but I have to go swimming.......... or ....

I love miso.  I love the seaweed salad.  I love unagi.  I love smoke salmon.  I love edamame.  I'm not wild about sashimi (the raw fish), but I love rolls (California rolls, spicey tuna rolls, etc).

Now you've gone and done it!  I'll probably skip swimming tomorrow night because of this thread.

We had great sushi the last 3 nights in 3 different restaurants! Pensacola is growing on me. My favorite roll ever is the Devil Roll at Ninja in New Orleans. Its a tuna roll with a hot mustard that blows me away. My other favorite is Tuna Tataki.

  • My other favorite is Tuna Tataki.

  • This is the greatest! The place I live is famous throughout Japan for katsuo (bonito) tataki. Never was a fish fan before coming here, but since the first time I ate it I can`t get enough. Was on the local TV station a few days ago talking about how it`s now my favorite food. (At least that`s what I think I said)

Other favorites are Maguro, salmon, bonito rolls, and fried shrimp rolls. There are so many places around that it isn`t too expensive either (unless I go for a few beers too!).

STOP!  I'm already going to skip swimming tomorrow night!  You want me to blow my diet too?! Actually, the place where we go doesn't have that kind of rolls (at least not that I know of), which is a good thing.
