Im 15, 185lbs, and 5'11, i palyed football for 3 years and this year ran a season of cross country, so im still rather big, considering i played on the line. I did ok as far as improvement went this year at cross country. I cut roughly 3.5 minutes off of my 5k. I got into cycling pretty serious this summer and ride whenever i get the chance, but there are few road races around here but many tri's so i would like to get into doing tri's. I own an old...1970's...road bike that was my dads and am lookin at gettin an '06 Giant TCR 2 and throwin some clip on aero bars on it, but now that im thinking more towards the Tri i am considerin puttin the extra cash into a Cervelo soloist bike, what do you guys think? Also, i live in Ohio so the winters are FREEZING so swimming will be hard for me to train for, i can prolly get out to the YMCA once maybe twice a week at most. I will most likely be competeing in Sprint tri's, if that makes any difference...What do you guys think i should do training wise, I looked at the training plans on the site and they look useful but i was wondering if anyone had any special advice. BTW biking is by far my specialty, my best 5k time is right around 20:15, it could use work but my biking i average 26 mph for a 20 mile ride on a windless day...Thanks for the advice.

Eric

If you are averaging 26 mph on a 1970 road bike for 20 miles, I would not buy a new bike. With that type of average you will already be toasting everyone on the bike leg.

Other than that I would get in the pool and get that to a good competitive level. It seems your run will be fine.

Focus on your limiters in the off season. Sounds like you are solid on the bike. Might want to spend more time running this winter. How's your swimming? That might be an area to focus on as well. It's OK to have a lopsided training plan in the winter when you are not racing.

Congratulations on starting triathlons at an age where you can carry it through your most productive years ... wish I had made that choice instead of smoking and drinking through the later part of high school and my 20's.

Sounds like swimming is going to be your weak leg. Try taking swimming lessons. I know that the prospects of getting up early on a cold morning and jumping in the pool are not that tempting, but based upon the skinny information given it seems like that is where you will make the most improvement in your time + technique.

Stick with it. Not many 15 year olds have the fortitude to try triathlons.

Who knows, if you show that you are really into it and serious, your parents might surprise you with a soloist?

PS: Gotta say it, 26 mph on a 1970's road bike ... sheesh! Smoking fast.
