Don't buy your bike in Zimbabwe.  But you can probably get a good price for it if you want to sell!

Bicycle boom pushes Zimbabwe inflation to 411 pct

Harare - Zimbabwe's inflation rate rocketed to an annual rate of 411 percent in October, buoyed mainly by soaring prices for bicycles as chronic fuel shortages forced more people to give up driving, data showed on Thursday. President Robert Mugabe's government has singled out inflation as the biggest scourge to the economy and recent price rises have been linked to the sliding local currency, which has tumbled about 66 percent against the dollar over the past month.

Damn!  And I was just about to book a flight to Harare to get a great deal on a new bike! 

I have a good high school friend who works for the UN in various African countries.  He spent about 4 years in Zimbabwe in the mid-90s.  Things haven't been going well there for a while, economically and politically.  Although I really would love to go to Africa (not to buy a bike, mind you), I don't think I'd include Zimbabwe on my itinerary anytime soon. 

Mozambique looks nice though.

And here I was thinking that the biggest scourge on the Zimbabwe economy was Mugabe and his government. Good to see I can be wrong some times and know there are other factors effecting the poorest countries on earth. DAM YOU BICYCLES< DAM YOU!!!

What, you didn't know it was the bicycles that were putting all those journalists in jail?  Rigging elections, threatening opponants, stealing from the treasury?  Damn bicycles!  I don't trust them one whit!
