So far looks like this is our team:

Possum
Hikergerb
Alreed
McFuzz
Triman50
Oipolloi

Two things:

1. Lets pick a real name
2. We need a team captian - volunteers?

Set be realistic about setting your goals. I do wonder about the Florida bunch counting laps since they have such a hard time counting votes! I'm getting fired up for this little challenge we have going. I went out for a run last night (14 degress and the wind howling) and decided running isn't going to be fun for the next few months (I guess I'll be working on the mental edge of the game as I freeze my a$$ off).

I'm with you about running outside.  I can't get myself to go out with weather under 40 degrees.  My wife will run in a blinding snow storm.

Sorry, but I don't think I'd make a great team captain.  I'm still fairly new to swimming but I'm putting my fair share of time in this winter.

Let me know what I need to do.

Also, as far as a team name.  Anything but cheeseheads.  Here's a couple of suggestions...

-The BT Blizzards

-The Flatlanders

Um, I'd suggest that a leader has already emerged!

All in favor of Steven (Hikergerb) to head our effort?

Aye

Maybe the "Icicles"?

I like Blizzard! The most challenging part of this, for me, is coming up with a reasonable goal. I am not a very good planner AT ALL, so I am looking forward to trying to really plan my month (not easy with all the holiday rigamarole)

On the plus side, I'll be in Florida the last week in Dec- so I can spy on the inumerates who don't count good, and I can get lots of OW swimming in, but the trick will be how to fairly quantify that.

Hikergerb, you make a GREAT captain! All in favor, post Aye!

Hikergerb, if you're cool with it, aye!!!!

Some swim related name possibilities: Midwest Barracudas, Midwest StingRays, Midwest Waves....or Midwest Blizzards is fine with me...since we'll be fighting them to get to the pool

I'm adding numbers now I think what Renee mentioned was important-consider all the parties and holidays, vacations, traveling, etc. so that you can set a reasonable goal!!

Somebody care to help me out?  I've never used the training logs nor have I ever taken part in a challange.

Am I supposed to add my swim goals to to my training logs?  If so, how?  What else do I do.  Sorry but this is all new to me.

Oops, sorry, I just meant I'm adding up my numbers so I can report a swim goal, but I think you should post your workouts in your training logs-that way we can all encourage you-give you the little "inspires" that you see posted on logs. I post my workouts as I complete them, but there is one for "planned" workouts and one for "actual" workouts.

If you want to add a workout to your training log, click on training log at the main menu bar above, and click on the day (the date) that you want to enter a workout. This will take you to a screen that has sections where you can enter workouts! Post if you have more questions!!

This will be fairly easy for me since I have such a tight schedule.  I will be swimming twice a week, every week, 70 laps (2 miles) per session minimum.  Do you think I'll need to swim more?  Opinions welcome.

Hey I'm new here but can swim. I was planning on focusing on spinning classes and swimming over the winter (most of MN year). I can be in for 25k plus.

On a seperate topic, what do you guys do? Hammer out a few miles and go home or a few 50s 100s 500s etc?

I do a variety of things-- check out my log. rarely do I swim all my yards straight through, I always work on drills, do some sets fast, do some slooooooow, etc.

I OK with being team captian. Let's settle on a team name (being a Viking fan the cheesehead thing wasn't working - sorry Possum). Everybody post thier favorite and we'll go from there.

ONe thing I ran into as I was totalling up my goal was the fact that my pool won't be open between Christmas and New Years. That is an important thign to consider.

Remember this is a challenge about meeting your goal. I am relatively new to this and it took me months to get disciplined enough to hold to a schedule. The month of Nov. has been great for me (see my logs). One of the best thigns that happened was a I a virtual training partner that I report to every day. It's a lot harder to blow off a workout that way (at least for me).

This is our team so far (at least to the best of my ability going through the postings):
Possum
Hikergerb
Alreed
McFuzz
Triman50
Oipolloi
bikingbruise

If I missed anyone let me know and I am sorry.

I am going to add you all to my PM list eventually so I can get your completed numbers off your logs. Goal numbers go in the forum I believe.

Go get wet!

Steve:  Thanks for accepting the Captain position.

Personally, I like the name Midwest Blizzards (since most of us just had our first of the year).

Should we also post our swim goals here, in this forum or just limit it to our training logs?

Nice to meet you all by the way.  Lets kick some arse!

Sigh. being a cheesehead during seasons like this one is VERY hard work. Have you seen the Packers record! If we are going to swim right over our southern, western and eastern competition, we must distance ourselves from the Cheddar. I'm cool wiith that.
I like Blizzard, and I like Prairie Shark, both are curretnly up in my logs along with an inspirational photo....

Thanks Steven!

As I stated before, my swim goal for December 2005 is 10,000 yards.

My plan:
12/1 2000 yards
12/6 2000 yards
12/8 2000 yards
12/13 2000 yards
12/15 2000 yards

I'll be on vacation (from work, maybe training) from 12/21--1/3 (give or take) so can't be sure whether I'll be at a fitness pool or not. I'd like to swim at least twice during this time.

Team name? Probably should have something to do about midwest weather this time of year. Blizzard, Icicles, Snowflakes ('cause we're each one different! or we're all flakes, not sure which), Tornados (have been in the news lately), Popcicles. Flatlanders works, but loses any reference to weather this time of year. Some way of combining names (real or screen) or states? Otters (we do have them along rivers throughout and they like to play)?

I tend to like names that are not nouns; Thus not names like bears, dogs, cats, ducks... I think that verbs are much cooler especially ones that are sorta funny. Here are few that describe me:

Road Rage
Anger Management (at least trying)
Almost serious
Desperatly not allowing age to creep in

Try these on:
Midwest
Rage/fury
Express/Go/dash
