Okay guys, I can't imagine there are very many of us here, but I just moved here in August and am fairly new to the sport. I'm having no problem picking up the running and I have a facility to swim at, but the riding is killing.

I really need some ideas about where to ride. Right now I'm just riding my running routes which is getting kinda old. I've also tried riding out to Sheridan Lake, but there has to be some good road routes around.

How 'bout you scope out all the good roads and tell me where they all are in February?

Kidding...wish I could help but I'm not there yet!

Is the path through town any good?  Doesn't it stretch from one end to the other?

The path is nice for running, but it's too congested for serious riding. I'll ride it if I'm just riding to get somewhere, but I can't train on it.

Trail running is not a problem here. Heck there is a 3 mile loop trail behind my apt and you can drive 15 min into the hills and hit more trails then you ever could imagine. Look up the Centenial and Mickelson trail online. They are both over 100 miles long and run through the hills. I'm planning on running a maraton on the Centenial early next fall. There are also some nice areas west of the "gap" that are perfect for running

Mountain biking is also pretty nice. It's just the danged roads. They are kinda crappy and only have shoulders in town. Throw in the fact that you can blind any SD driver by putting a windshield in front of their face and it can be kind of interesting. I have heard of good riding in the hill city area, and after driving through there, I can see some possibilities, but I'm not one to drive 10 minutes every day just to go for a ride.

In the spring I'm most likley going to hook up with the Tech cycling club and see if they have any good routes

The Mickelson Trail Marathon is tentatively on my schedule for early June.  It will depend on whether or not I'm ready for it.  I don't want to run it just to run it...I want to set a PR!  So if I'm not conditioned for a PR I won't be doing it.  Hadn't heard of Centenial...I'll have to check it out.  Definitely looking forward to having trails again!  Where I live now sucks for running.  No sidewalks anywhere!  There are two places in town I'll run...a park with a 1.5 mile loop, and the base.  Otherwise...no running!

I am (unfortunately) a horrible mountain biker.  I don't think I'll be getting too much into the mountain biking scene while I'm there.  The roads can't possible be worse than the roads here in Abilene.  There is only one route I can ride from my house.  Otherwise, I have a 10-25 minute drive to get decent riding in.  And all the roads are chipsealed...yuck.  So after that...anything will seem like heaven!   I'm sure you'll find somewhere...it always takes me awhile to find the good places.  Definitely hook up with the cycling club...they WILL know all the good spots!

The mickelson marathon is in the fall I believe. From what I've heard, the centenial is pretty relaxed (and mostly downhill). I was happy to get trails too. I moved here from Indiana in August. I actually have elevation and scenery to look at while I run.

Bad mountain biker 'eh? You can't be a rider out here and not mountain bike, it's against the law. Ha ha. Don't worry, I fall alot too. There are a ton of trails tho, so it's not hard to find one within your ability. The Mickelson is an rails to trails project, so it's all nicely groomed rail bed. Could probably be ridden on a cross bike.

Mickelson is definitely 4 June 2006:

I used to live in Colorado so I remember elevation and scenery well.  But even city running in Boston beats stupid Abilene, TX!   I saw that one of your LT goals is to run the Boston marathon?  It's fun...great town, good time!

See...my problem with mountain biking is not that I fall too much...um...it's that I don't EVER fall.  I am the world's biggest mountain biking wuss.   But I have heard that you can't live there without a mountain bike so I may have to learn...GASP!

There must be another one in the fall I'm thinking of then.

You said you were in CO for a while? Where you stationed at Peterson? I used to live in Denver for 6 years before moving to the vast corn field known as Indiana. That's part of the reason I jumped at the chance to move out here.

Yea I don't know when I'm going to do the Boston, but it is high on my list. I've have a friend that has ran it and is planning to again next time around. She said it was a blast.

This is another run that is on my to do list:

Not sure about fall races.  I might be 'out of the country' come fall so I haven't looked that far in advance!

I went to USAFA..so I was stationed in CO, but not at Peterson.  My sis lives in Denver right now!  I LOVE Denver!  I visit whenever I can.  I will be very excited that I will only be 7 hours from her by car versus the 11+ I have to drive now to get there!  Most of my planned triathlons for next season are in Boulder actually.  There isn't much in Rapid City that I've found.

Yeah, Boston was definitely one of my favorite marathons.  It was probably because I ran with friends and had dozens of friends spectating the course, but the atmosphere is just great!

The Big Horn runs look fun...okay, NOT the 100mile but I would do the 30k   Which one were you thinking?  If you say the 100mile you're crazy   But crazy isn't so bad I guess...

haha, i'd like to do the 100m eventually but I'd start with the 30k. I've done a 50m endurance race which was a ton of fun. It's a lot different from running as to quality you only need to keep a 20 mpm pace, so it's not running the whole time. When I did the 50, we even stopped and slept for 2 hours and would take meal brakes. More like fast hiking then running.

I was in AFROTC back in my undergrad days until they kicked me out because I have "asthma" and we took a trip out to the acadamy. Those cadets are hard core. Props for making it through.

and yes, having Denver (and Boulder) within driving distance is very nice.

I cannot imagine doing any distance longer than a marathon...OMG...that would hurt.  Not making excuses, but my knees are crap these days and I'm probably pushing my luck just running marathons...I probably shouldn't go for ultras

Oh, all this trail running talk is making me super-ansty to get out of Texas!!!  Dang it...I want out!

i would be ansy too. I just got back from a 9 mile run going back through some of the neighborhoods. It was really windy and kinda cold, but saw a few deer and some other wildlife along the way. It was fantastic. Even running roads out here are better then any trail run in Indiana

I used to live in Rapid and also Hot Springs. There is a police officer who works for the city. Darn it I forget his name. Was friends with him. He did an ironman. The did an article on him in the newspaper. He laughed about it.

The bike path through town. Right in the middle of town. Those bridges it goes under. They are the worst part of town. Bums hang out there. Even knew of a woman murdered under the bridge right by the high school. I live at night. When I used to ride my bike on the path. I used to dress in black sweat pants and T shirt, and had my white helmet. Then when I approached the bridges. The bums would say: Hey five O! They thought I was a cop until I was already past them.

The marathon in the fall is the MtRushmore marathon. It starts at Mt Rushmore. The Marathon on the Mickleson trail is in Deadwood I think. Then there is the Lean Horse Ultra. I did the 50K the first year they had it.

I really can't think of roads to ride in the Hills. You should go talk to the bike shop in town.. Two Wheeler Dealer... They are nice.

Noticed one of you is in the Air Force. Don't know where you're living. If you get tired of the wind. You could move to the west side in the Canyon Lake area. I used to live at the Canyon Lake Estates apartments. They are well run. Not the newest or best. But then you could make a profit on your living allowance. And they are respectably nice. Tell Charlie I sent you. Charlie is the lady manager. Also the drive to work won't be bad as you can hop right on the freeway on the west side of downtown.

Also always beware of the deer. Tons of deer in the Hills. I knew of a 13 pointer who used to hang out in a neighborhood on the west side.
