or why I have to stay up all night. I start the 8 pm-8 am shift tomorrow. The plan is to stay awake till 8 tomorrow morning and then sleep all day. I have a feeling this is really going to suck.

Maybe you could get your 8 hours of sleep / night by going 6 hours 8am to 2pm, then two more hours before your shift starts?

yea, it is a lifestyle. It's really tough. I used to work graveyard too. 9pm to 8am. I got home around 8:30 and slept until 2 or 3. It's really hard to fall asleep unless you can make your room completely dark. That was my problem. It sucked. I was always tired, I got sick really easily, I started losing weight.

No matter how you prepare for it, it will hit you hard. You can try to stay up a few night ahead of time, but I would just make sure you are well rested the day you go in and hope you don't fall asleep. IN a few weeks, it will get easier.

This is where being in college has its benefits...I've learned to sleep in a room with the blinds up, TV, radio, and typing roommate combined. But that's been napping, not actual sleeping. I've got to figure out my diabetes too, which will be interesting. I have a feeling I'm going to eat a lot of cereal.

Yeah, I did the rotating shifts in college, midnights, evenings, days, repeat.  The problem with midnights was not so much getting to sleep but being waked by a telephone or some one knocking on the door.  Doesn't take much at the 4 hr point of sleep to bring me out.  Then, I couldn't go back to sleep.  Couple of days of that and it really would wear me down.  You will be better off if you can find a sleeping arrangement that is really, really quiet for eight hours.  You may not need the quiet all night but to get through the full rest you need not to be disturbed.

(I've wondered if those Bose headphones that block out outside noise would have helped me get through daytime sleeping.  There are expensive but they have a money back trial offer so you could try it.)

I work 6pm to 6am...14 days per month. I get to run, bike and swim on my days off when everyone else it at work and the weather is beautiful! It takes getting used to, but I like it.

well, the time is now 3 AM and my first tour has ended. It was actually kinda FUN! THere's a constant stream of activity, never a dull moment. I was a little miffed that they sent me home after only 6 hours, but whatever.
