![]() | ![]() Since Christianity is talked about so much on BT, it would be helpful, I think, to identify what kind of Christian one is talking about. To my knowledge, there are over 25,000 Protestant denominations in the world. Even within Catholicism, there are more than a dozen Rites, in addition to the Latin, or Roman, one. For example, if I started talking about the Christian sex abuse scandal, it would make little sense. The scandal happened within the Catholic Church, the one that I belong to. It gets more to the point to name the specific church. It would also make little sense to say that because the men who flew the plans into the World Trade Center were Muslim that, therefore, it is a teaching of Islam that one should fly planes into buildings full of innocent people. There is so much that is attributed to Christians that I not only disagree with, but that I can make a plausible claim is heretical. Personally, I feel the need to point out misunderstanding when this happens, but hey, that's just me. Still, it may be helpful to get more specific when talking about a Christian group protesting against homosexuals, for example, or a group that believes that the world was created six thousand years ago. We may all share the belief in Christ, but there are many, many differences that keep us from being in full communion with each other. Edited by dontracy 2005-12-20 1:33 PM |

Giver ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I here ya, Don. The most glaring differences are, of course, between Protestants and Catholics, and other more minor differences exist between the Protestant denominations. But to me, it seems like the vastest differences exist in how individuals, regardless of denomination, structure and apply thier faith. Some Catholics believe church doctrine letter for letter, others practice "cafeteria" Catholicism. Lots of Protestants of differeing denominations are fundamentalists, many others, again regardless of denomination are more progressive in their beliefs. Because of this, it's hard, first of all, to categorize Christianity as a whole, and harder still to ascribe a set of beliefs even to a particular denomination without stereotyping.

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would think vast would not need anything in front of it (or the endo of it). Either something is vast or it isnt... Kind of like unique I like it though Jim, it is my new word for the week. Kind of like when I was in San Fran and made up jackowacked. Meaning something is jackowacked when it is f**ked up. run4yrlif - 2005-12-20 1:57 PM I was wondering about that. It sounds better than "most vast", so I went with vastest.

![]() | ![]() Maybe vaster? Personally, I'd like to learn more about many of the Protestant denominations that I know little about. I'm not even sure what Evangelical means, for example. Is that a particular church, or is it more of a movement within various churches? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a love-the-Lord-thy-God-with-all-thy-heart-and-mind-and-soul-and-love-thy-neighbor-as-thyself-Christian, a sort of judge-not-that-ye-be-not-judged Christian and perhaps a touch of a let-him-without-sin-cast-the-first-stone Christian. But, I'm not dogmatic about it. TW Edited by tech_geezer 2005-12-20 2:05 PM |

Personally, I'd like to learn more about many of the Protestant denominations that I know little about. I'm not even sure what Evangelical means, for example. Is that a particular church, or is it more of a movement within various churches? Evangelical describes lots of churches. And I'd like to learn more about the Catholic church. I covered the memorial service for Pope John Paul's passing for the small town newspaper I used to work for, and stood out like a sore thumb when I just walked in and sat down in a pew. The respect and quiet that was in that sanctuary as people came in was amazing. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good question! I never really thought about it even though I am a member of a church that considers themselves Evangelical. It is probably one if the larger churches in San Diego. Horizon Christian Fellowship. I did a quick search and came up with this: "To begin, lets break down the two words. The term "Christian" essentially means "little Christ." Christian is the term given to followers of Jesus Christ in the first century A.D. (Acts 11:26). The term "evangelical" comes from the Greek word that means "good news." Evangelism is sharing the good news of the salvation that is available through Jesus Christ. An Evangelical, then, is a person dedicating to promoting the good news about Jesus Christ. Combined, the description "Evangelical Christian" is intended to indicate a believer in Jesus Christ who is faithful in sharing and promoting the good news." Most churches that I have visited come under this description. 99.9% of the time there is little talk of goverment or how we can "take over the nation". Most is spent on teachings and what can be done to share our beliefs with others. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There is a terrific book by Paul Ferrini called "Reflections of the Christ Mind" which discusses the qualities of Jesus and how to implement them into one's life. Those familiar with Ferrini's work know that he is more new age than modern relgious. It's a great book for any faith. Another great book for those posting on this thread is Merriam Webster's Dictionary. It is a more vast plethora of knowledge and helpful in a vastly verbose community. |
