Pre-race routine:

Got up with a few hours until the race start. Had a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter and some fruit. Showered, got dressed and away I went. Got there a little early because I still had to register.
Event warmup:

Long walk from the Jeep to registration back to the Jeep and then to the start line.

Comments:

Started out way too fast. Did the first mile in 7:00 flat. This was the week after my first ultra so I wanted to prove that I hadn't lost all my speed. This really ended up hurting me on the day. Once I hit the 1 mile marker I slowed myself down to a much more reasonable 7:30 pace. Hit the 5K mark in a PR pace and I was happy to slow myself down after that.

The course turned off of the lake and headed into the neighborhoods where we started to catch the hills. By mile 5 I could feel the aches and pains building in my knees and ankles. I held on and pushed through but by 10K I just wanted to be done. Finished in just under 1:15 which was my goal for the day. Not bad for a race I didn't take very seriously.
What would you do differently?:

Probably would have run a much easier pace. I felt like I had really been beaten up after this run.
Post race
Warm down:

The finish line was a good mile away from the start and I had no idea. So I was in a technical shirt and running shorts in the freezing weather. Luckily this was the Jogger Egg Nogger! They had coolers filled with water, gatorade, egg nog, rum egg nog and whiskey egg nog. Somehow I found a way to stay warm. Hung around for the awards and then got a ride back to my Jeep (I was parked REALLY far away) with Manny the event photographer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Proper rest and desire.

Event comments:

The egg nog at the finish makes this race worth it. It's a toss up as to whether I'll be back next year.
