Subject: is sasquatch real?
so, having a cold (again), i spent a lot of time reading online the last couple days. long story short, i ended up looking up stuff on 'mythical' creatures with ella and stumbled across a website about bigfoot/sasquatch. am now completely convinced that they exsist. of course, reading that jane goodall believes in them was a huge eye openner, but also reading about the bili ape and the other more recent discoveries, as well as learning how hundreds of years ago native people in north america made statues of ape like creatures when we're not supposed to have apes (other than ourselves) in north america, has made me think that it isn't just a bunch of hoaxes (although i'm sure a lot of reports are hoaxes, just not all of them). i'm even rethinking a wierd experience bill and i had in the boundry waters canoe area several years ago. anyway, i thought it would make an interesting cup of joe topic. so, do you believe in bigfoot?

bigfoot field research organization: http://www.bfro.net

interesting article: http://www.mailtribune.com/outdoor/archive/2000/070600o2.htm

article about a new possible sub-species of ape (very similar to descriptions of bigfoot/sasquatch/yeti - nests on the ground, living far from humans, very tall (6'+) and hairy, vegetarian diet, etc.): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3730574.stm

jane goodall, famous primatologist, about 25 minutes in, says she is 'sure they exist': http://www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2002/Sep/hour1_092702.html

ps. my husband, who now is thinking they could be real, was saying i should post a thread about what size bike they would ride (BIG), and if they would shave or not. ha ha ha.

Another good reason to use sources other than the internet to gather information.

There was a guy years ago who, after he died, had his family reveal that he was behind most of those bigfoot hoaxes.

If Jane Goodall actually believes that bigfoot exists, it may only prove that she is losing her mind.

Humans can be made to believe almost anything, and the best way to go about it is through lies and half-truths. Supplement that with an overriding will to believe on the part of the listener and you're in business.

He's a fearsome beast, even known to take out bears at times.  It's good for the population though.  He just takes out the old, weak ones.

Complete hogwash. First of all there is no such thing as a old, weak bear. Secondly, in head-to-head competition, much older bears have been known to dominate the feeble sasquatch, banishing them to compete in the female age groups.

Wow, what a coincidance.  I'm watching a documentary on cable right now about Big Foot.  Don't believe a word of it though.

agreed, which is why i have links to an article from the bbc as well an interview on 'science friday' from npr

There was a guy years ago who, after he died, had his family reveal that he was behind most of those bigfoot hoaxes.

the theory on that is that after there were real footprints found, this guy made lots of others on his own to sell and make a profit off the media coverage. according to people who believe in bigfoot, the wallace family wanted to get more attention and that's why they brought the story out again after mr. wallace died. like i said above, i have no doubt that a huge number of reportings are fake, but i don't know if all of them are.

If Jane Goodall actually believes that bigfoot exists, it may only prove that she is losing her mind.

yea, but its jane goodall! she's probably smarter than most of us to start with, so even if she IS losing her mind - i believe her!

i would love to believe in these creatures - same goes for ghosts, unicorns, fairies, etc...all things my preschooler believes are real. there isn't much to prove that fairies are real (although, don't tell ella that), unicorns we know were made from finding norwhal horns, ghosts may be a matter of faith, and until yesterday, i thought the sasquatch was a hoax - people walking around in fake feet and gorilla suits. now i'm not so sure.

we humans tend to believe we've discovered everything 'but a handful of cures to common disease (all of which we're working on). still, western science believed that legends of an ape like creature living in the mountains were just that - legends and myth - until someone other than a native finally saw a mountain gorilla. until the early 1900s, they were thought to be just a myth. same goes for the panda. we were also sure that coelacanths were extinct for the 70 million years, only to be caught off the coast of south africa. we don't know everything.

i read that the 'chupacabra' they found in texas (two of them) turned out to be coyotes w/ mange. it may be that's how the whole myth started in the first place - bald, sickly coyotes?

as for nessie - a lot of that was also a hoax, but i wouldn't be surprised if some plesiosaurs survived the mass extinction 250 million years ago. many animals and plants on land were wiped out, but the impact in the oceans was less so. many animals we take for granted today (crocodiles, sharks, turtles) survived, while the land dinosaurs were wiped out ('cept for smaller types that may or may not have evolved into birds - although the common theory now is that birds and some dinosaurs shared a common ancestor, versus birds evolving directly from dinosaurs). anyway, i think its possible a hand full of plesiosaurs could have survived, and that the original nessie might have been one of those.

what we really need are a picture of your feet!

has anyone ever asked what KIND of bear you are? grizzly? or common black? i bet a grizzly could take out a sasquatch, but black bears are cupcakes in comparison.

Yeah, I know we don't know everything. I can see us continuing to discover many many things. But I cannot see us discovering an 8 foot tall, 800 lb primate in the lower 48.

Can I prove that sasquatch does not exist? Of course not. Can anybody prove that it does? Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

its hard to believe that an 8 foot tall anything would slip past unseen. BUT - they HAVE been seen, not just since the term 'bigfoot' was coined, but there are stories of ape-like creatures in many native american cultures going back before a time when they could have seen any of the apes we know today (from asia and africa). in the pacific northwest, people and even aircraft have been lost in the massive woods never to be seen again. not too hard to believe that there might be animals deep in the woods that we've never seen, even if they are big.

one of the things that has me thinking twice is the giganto theory. it proposes that sasquatch may have evolved from gigantopithecus blacki. gigantopithecus proposed size, diet, and habitat match that of the legendary sasquatch. 200,000 years ago they lived along side homo ergaster (aka homo erectus). they are thought to have gone extinct, but we thought the same of the coelacanths which was supposed to have died out long before gigantopithecus blacki even evolved.

many people think we're one of the only bi-pedal ape to have lived on this planet. people know homo sapiens (us), homo erectus, and maybe neanderthal, but there is a huge list of others, including gigantopithecus (there's australopithecus afarensis, gigantopithecus blacki, homo ergaster (aka homo erectus), homo habilis, heidelbergensis, neanderthalensis, rudolfensis, paranthropus boisei, and us. many of these lived at the same time - check out this dvd from the bbc: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/prehistoric_life/tv_radio/wwcavemen/...

two new animals were recently discovered in the depths of the jungles, either of which could be a new species. in both cases, all they have are reported sightings, a few fuzzy photographs, and (maybe) some hair samples:

BIGFOOT ROCKS!!!!! I do believe and I know two people that have claimed to see it. One was when she was hiking with her familyin the mountains of Idaho. They saw it run across the road. They found footprints.  There has been multiple sightings in that area according to BFRO. I go on the BFRO site a lot and even if most of the stories are fake, they are entertaining. The world is a large place there are still parts of the Pacific Northwest that haven't been explored.

I think most of the people that do see bigfoot are nonbelievers UNTIL they see something. If I saw something freaky run across they road or if some huge mammal chased me through the woods, that would definitely change my mind. Wouldn't that make anyone think twice?

As I said, it is impossible to prove a negative. Do UFOs exist? I don't think so, but I can't prove it. Do Oompaloopas exist? I doubt it, but I can't prove it. Do hobbits exist? Probably not, but I can't prove it. Do fairies exist, and if so, how many can dance on the head of a pin?

I could go on, but if you're predisposed to believe something (the colon cleansing thread in the Injuries and Health comes to mind) nothing I can say can make you believe otherwise.

Is there anything provable, anything conclusive that could persuade the majority of natural scientists of the existence of sasquatch? No, that's why eyewitness reports and circumstantial "evidence" is cited so often.

Are we talking about the same thing? Are you arguing that sometime in the existence of the planet there may have been something similar to sasquatch, or are you arguing that there is a sasquatch in existence and living on Earth today?

Similarly, are you arguing that hobbits are scurrying around Australia as we speak? ("G'day Frodo, what say ye to some widgety grubs"?)
