I think it's a textbook definition of irony.  I watched it in utter amazement that someone could be so unbelievably dense.  He even made a comment at one point to the effect that, "People don't sleep in that area without dying,"  all while pointing to that area...where his camp was set up!!!  I watched with no sympathy, but for his girlfriend who died as an innocent, albeit equally foolish for not knowing better, bystander.  Hell, he might have had a better chance of survival swimming around the tip of South Africa in a Sirloin Speedo.  It's one thing to have a chance encounter with a Grizzly in the wilderness and another to do what he did.  I was, however, very impressed by a lot of the photos they showed at the end of the movie.

Just watched it the other day. I thought Herzog did an amazing job with compiling the footage and telling the story. The most gripping point was when he was listening to the audio of the attack, asked Jewel to turn it off, and told her she must never listen to it, and should destroy the tape (although there was a sick twisted side of me that was like "hey, I wanna hear it". Uck.)

I also thought it was amazing that they had left for the season, then Timmy decided to return, and the poor girlfriend went too. I also got the surreal sense like he knew something would happen (I don't mean that he planned it, per se, but the way he remains in the frame in his last segment of film, and the way that the only time his girlfriend is on the film is right at the end... weird). That could be my impression, however, because of how the film-maker/narrator phrased his telling of the story.

Did you watch the extra on the DVD about how they composed the music for the film on the fly? It was long, but it was pretty cool.

Did you buy the DVD?  Someone here saw it on Discovery Channel and told me I've got to see it.  I've been scanning for a couple of weeks and it doesn't appear that they are going to rebroadcast it.

OMG, what about when he's like, "IT's HER POO! It was just inside her! This was her poo...". I literally could not believe I was watching it, and it was FOR REAL. That guy was CRACKERS!

A well-done documentary about a very, very confused man. It seems he thought himself "different" from other humans that might encounter bears in the wilderness-it was really only a matter of time before he was attacked.

It's so important to have respect for the wilderness, and awareness of one's own limitations. Here in Montana, there are fatal bear attacks every year. I myself had an encounter w/ a grizzly in the backcountry of Glacier Nat'l Park a few years ago and I will NEVER forget my fear or how fortunate we were to be spared by the bear. We were on his turf, and we backed off the trail unhurt only because he allowed us to.

Recently a hunter was killed by a griz while elk hunting. He was field-dressing the carcass when he was attacked-the widow says the FWP knew the bears were in the area and had become accustomed to hearing gun shots as "dinner bells". She is suing the state for negligence. While it's tragic that she lost her husband in this way, I cannot believe she would try to point fingers anywhere than her late husband. This suit makes me SO MAD and is related to "Grizzly Man". If you are out in the WILDERNESS, and find yourself to be no longer at the top of the food chain, it's your own d*mn fault.

I had read about this guy in Ouside magazine so I was interested in seeing the DVD.
I watched it with my 12-year-old son. We were laughing when he started crying over a dead bee. He said something like, "Poor bee. He was just doing his job gathering pollen and he died....poor bee" And he cried. How goofy is that? I agree in that I feel bad for his girlfriend. But he seems to be the victim of his own stupidity. (or is it naivite'?)

Good documentary, but the guy was indeed bizzar-o. What a gruesome way to die. Sends shivers up my spine!
