Sunny
Total Time = 1h 38m 28s
Overall Rank = 221/236
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 8/9
Pre-race routine:

Start time at 10:26:45, so up at 6:00. Finished packing. Breakfast: tomato juice, kashi cereal, yogurt, water, coffee. Off to the race at 7:45
Set up, etc. etc.
Event warmup:

Swim 6 or so laps in the diving well. Better than last year - I didn't do anything.
Swim
  • 08m 1s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Much better than last year. This time it was almost completely crawl. I only did side stroke to get a look at people ahead and behind.
Started doing flip turns, but they were uncomfortable with people close behind or in front so switched to open turns
Time improved 23 secs (5%) from last year. given the short time, pretty decent...
What would you do differently?:

Just need to swim more and get faster. I'm pretty satisfied with the rest.
Transition 1
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Improve over 1 minute from last year. Funny how not having all my stuff soaking wet helps... BUT, hybrid bike doesn't hang on rack well. It came off as I came up to the rack. I have a kickstand so recovered, but...
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice transitions more. I always feel a little disoriented when I'm trying to rush to get into gear. Need to figure out something different for bike.
Bike
  • 45m 36s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't drink enough and was thirsty when I hit T2. Still - drank more than prior races. Hybrid bike was limiting performance with the wind. I concentrated on keeping cadence at 90 and let the speed go where it had to. I did try to keep the speed up. Only dropped down REALLY slow once on the worst hill got behind a car and other bikes, couldn't maintain momentum.
Very disappointed in time. This is actually 8 sec. SLOWER than last year. I guess the wind got me.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get more time in the saddle. Consider saddle adjustments.
Transition 2
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Again, transition didn't feel right. trouble getting socks on. BUT after last year - socks WERE going on.
This transition was 35 sec FASTER than last year. Should have been more, but I took a wrong turn coming into transition area and had to back track a few feet.
What would you do differently?:

practice, practice, practice
Run
  • 38m 19s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

My calves were tight coming out of transition. I ran for about 5 minutes then did a fast one minute walk. Repeated 2-3 times. Then just walked through water stations. last mile started to pick up the pace. Then really sped up last quarter and sprinted the ending chute
This was 41 sec. FASTER than last year. I'm actually disappointed. With all the running I've been doing I expected more improvement.
What would you do differently?:

Should have paced it better. I think I could have run faster. I should have picked up the pace sooner and pushed through those walks...
Post race
Warm down:

walked around. Drank a Chai (my favorite recovery drink). at some oreos and jelly beans. drank lots of water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not enough swim and bike time. Poor run pacing...

Event comments:

The post race activities were pretty minimal.
One item of note: I dropped the SDM portion of my Timex at some point on the bike. I thought it was gone. at the end of the race, I walked up to the RD with faint hope. SOMEONE had turned it in!!! Thanks who ever you are.

I'll update the specific times as soon as they are posted.

damn, it's early to be racing!  While you may not be happy overall with your performance, just think of how far you've come in such a short time.  And now you have plenty of information about what to work on for your upcoming races.

BTW, I think you kicked ass!

Nuke angel,

I thought I was going to meet you finally but the change in race date postponed that! That was a great race! It sounds like it went MUCH smoother than last year and improvement is what it's all about. if you are like me the improvements just do not come fast enough!

I used to have some problems with tight calves off the bike. You are right, more training and especially bricks will help but after I started taking Endurolytes - no more cramping off the bike.
Great race!

I'm sorry I took so damn long to read through your race report and post. This last week I've lost the plot a little. This is a terrific race! You've improved so many ways over last year, it's really exciting. I hope you feel properly proud of yourself for sticking with it. Yes you ARE a real athlete and you have lots of proof! I can't wait to hear about the next one!
