IMO they are all pretty much the same these days.  Quality is not the same no matter what you get and the silly Windows operatating system makes it even worse.  None of the manufatures make all their own parts.  Parts that tend to go bad such as hard drive, batteries, etc all tend to come from the same manufactures.

ETA: I guess my recommendation is to get the one with the features you want the most for the best price and don't worry about the brand too much.  I'd get as much memory as you can afford though.  Lately the software is so frigging inflated as to memory consumption.  Part of that is the 64-bit software though.

I've had a Toshiba Satellite for 3 years today (happy anniversary laptop!) and no problems whatsoever - still love it.

I'd stick with the Lenovo's for durability they aren't the prettiest but they do last a long time. also, if you are going to be doing any realy work with the laptop, make sure you DO NOT get a glossy screen! the glossy screens are good for movie watching but for real work, they will give you a head ache.

HP's the only ones I would look at from HP are the elitebooks everything else from them is junk.

Toshiba, RUN from them. It's been a long time since their "I checked my notebook" days an their quality and durability is just horible

Acer. Second teir company their strong point is price only!!

Dell... they are a mixed bag, some models are great for both performance and durability, others...run!

and I used to love Dells and hate lenovo's! I've learned to get past the boring corporate look of the Lenovo's and appreciate their durability and quality!

can you tell I'm in IT!!! lol

We always had Dells then my work setup a big time discount with HP. We very reluctantly bought 3 of them. Couldn't be happier. Actually they're as good as or better than Dell, imho. Customer service is not even close...HP by a mile.

Just my $.02.
