Subject: Stomach bug before HM
I am supposed to run a Half Marathon tomorrow.  I've been looking forward to it for several months. Yesterday I was bed ridden with a nasty stomach flu or food poisoning.  I threw up all day.  Finally in the night I was able to keep down some Gatorade.  I feel better today but am still very nauseous and weak.  I have no appetite but am trying to drink a lot of fluids.  Should I still run this race?  Any suggestions for replenishing myself before the race?  Thanks!

I'd probably make it a race day decision.  If I personally still felt sick to my stomach I wouldn't run.  Otherwise I would.  Rest up today, hydrate best you can (include electrolytes), eat some food later if you can, and hope for the best.

Is it your first HM? Are you looking to just complete or be competitive? If you really hydrate and try to get down some easily digestible carbs you could be okay but might not perform at your best.

I thought I had a stomach bug before my HM in November but I was just obsessing and apparently nervous (even though I didn't think I was nervous). Could it be that you're anxious? Once I recognized my own anxiety my appetite returned and I was able to keep down food. I hydrated with Gatorade and water and ate a low fibre high carb meal the day before and morning of and carried some gu on me and did just fine.

I hope you feel better and make the right call for yourself. Let go of any expectations you have of the race and just run it, if you choose to.
