Subject: How Hard is this?

So I'm going through old youtube music videos and found this clip.....  How hard is this workout to climb up the wall with pegs?  Is it harder than basic pullups and chinups?

I know it's hard ,  just wanted to put out the John Waite song.

Wow, nostalgia time. I actually have Visionquest on DVD. It needs a bluray release.

I'm a child of the 80s, so this is one of my all time favorites. The best song is Lunatic Fringe, imho. This is also Madonna's film debut, for what it's worth.

The pegboard scene has always been my ultimate fitness dream. I have no upper body strength at all. Now that I'm dropping weight, I think about getting into serious lifting in addition to endurance training. I want to climb a peg wall. Always have. But I have this feeling I will probably do a full ironman before I do that.

I hated those peg boards.

For me, they were easier than pullups, though.

I loved the movie and still hate those darn peg boards. It brings me back to middle school and high school days where we would have to "attempt" to do them in gym class. One day I will be able to do it, one day....

Thats what she said.

Sorry I had to do it. But peg boards are rough. We used to climb them during wrestling. I guess my coach had a thing for vision quest.

I remember the peg board being friggin hard when I was in middle/high school.  Love Vision Quest too... one of my favorite books and movies.   Watching that scene made me go try the peg board over and over until I made it.

I love the quote from one of YT replied "Louden Swain shows that weight-cutting has not diminished his strength." Being a former HS wrestler, cutting weight was one of the worst things ever. They have regulations now that you can only cut to (when I was in HS) 7% total body fat. In the 80s you could drop as much weight as possible to make a weight division. I don't remember how much weight he had to drop to wrestle Shute but, if if it was more than 10 lbs. he would feel awful.

As far as the peg board, we had one in our wrestling room and it wasn't terribly difficult to use except ours was made by the shop class I think. The holes didn't have the metal lining like Visionquest and the pegs were a little rounded on the ends. Ours was shaped like an a lower case n, and when you would move sideways the pegs would slip out. Once you got moving it was easier than a pull up, but the initial pull-up peg placement took some strength.

I remember it being pretty difficult, maybe not as difficult as pull-ups. BUT I really I hated pull-ups.

Wrestling was my favorite sport.  I spent some time on the peg boards and climbing the rope.  We had to do both without the help of our feet.  I can still remember getting to the top of that rope, all the way to the top of the gym, without using my feet.  Got pretty good at it.

Now, I probably couldn't make it 1/4 of the way up.

On the issue of weight loss for wrestling... That was always the dirty secret in wrestling.  We just had to make weight.  Nothing was said about how we accomplished that.  I never had much of an issue, as after football season, I would lose 10 pounds and be done with it.  Some of the smaller guys would be pushing the limits all the time, running before matches with trash bags on, etc.  Of course, my HS sophomore year, I wrestled heavy weight, and actually had to make weight with my clothes on, etc., because I had to weigh over 189.  Heck, I had to eat, just to make that.

Also, Vision Quest was AWESOME!!!  May have to watch it soon....get some inspiration for the upcoming tri season.
