Subject: Speed Intesity VS. VO2 Max Intensity???
The training plan I'm following is now having me do Speed and VO2 intervals and I was wondering what types of sets each one involved. (You can check my log to see exactly how they word it if you want.) In my mind, the way I get to VO2 max is by going at max speed so essentially they'd be the same thing? I've looked for a description for both in the program, but no luck...Can someone give examples of specific types of sets for the two?? I'm mostly referring to swimming, but any advice on S/B/R would be appreciated.

Not sure exactly what the plan is saying, but my guess is that "speed intensity" is somewhat lower than VO2 max intensity - maybe somewhere around/just above/just below than your 1,000 yd T-pace. Again, just a guess, but that's how I would interpret it...

What's the program you're following?  Surprised they don't help you define terms/zones.

My best guess is that 'speed intensity' is essentially an all-out sprint.  That's based solely on the fact that it's given for 25s on :20 rest (basically 1:1, work:rest ratio).  VO2max is going to be above threshold and, depending how good of a swimmer you are, probably about the max pace you could 'sprint' 200-400m when rested.  If you have a threshold pace, I'd guess maybe T-(5-10sec) or so.  Even on :45 rest, doing 8 of them is going to hurt.  If your last is with a few seconds of your first, and it feels like you couldn't do a 9th, then you probably have the pacing about right.

If  your are following Matt Fitzgerald's plan the speed intensity is all out balls to the wall.

Yes, the plan I'm following is by Matt Fitzgerald and that pretty much what I did...Averaged about :17/25m and it was a killer. For my VO2 max sets I went almost as hard as I could, but I also took less breaths (every 4th stroke instead of 2nd and even did a couple lengths only taking 2 breaths.) Not sure if that was what was intended, but it definitely got the lungs burning and the heart rate going...I guess this is what I'll do until someone steps in and says otherwise. It was a great swim regardless...

There's no reason to do that.  Swim faster and breathe as much as you need to do so.

Do you happen to have a copy of the book? I bought the plan through training peaks so I don't have the actually book it came from...It just pops the plan into my calendar. I appreciate any info you can provide...

Ok, on a serious note, contact matt Fitzgerald, not BT. You paid good money for the training peaks plan, I honk more than the book costs. Supporting documents should be with the purchase.

I have the book with me today.  Just email me and [email protected] and I try to help you out as much as possible.  About the contact Matt Fitzgerald comment.  I had a training buddy that had some questions about his plan.  He contacted Matt several times and he helped him out each time.

You can add me to the list of people who have contacted Matt and received the help I needed...Literally responded in less than an hour with the PDF attachments to the definitions for each sport. Very cool. I appreciate all the help, guys...
