Who else is out to be a Pumpkin?  It will be my first HIM and I was thrilled that it fell at the right time in my plan (Fink) because I've wanted to do it since I found it when I was researching HIMs.  I just want to be pumpkin :)  I've heard the course is great too.  It's close to home, so I intend to train on it at some point this summer.  I know you're out there because some of you are in the same mentor group.  But there's got to be more of you...tips? Worries? Hopes?

The one in Vegas or the one on the East Coast? I'm in for the Vegas P-Man.

The plan is you do both loops and I do one, right?    How would June 23 work for you?

Sorry just saw this.

It's my wedding aniversary and if I want to see another one not so good. Tongue out

You've been biking to work so you can do both loops. I'll have to get back to you on a date. I'm just trying to enjoy my taper right now before Saturday's race.

Have a great anniversary!  And congratulations

The question isn't whether or not I can cover the ground, it's whether or not I can cover the ground fast enough to keep up with YOU!  That's why I'm pushing for the loop handicap Tongue out

I should be able to do it later; it'll just take a little more arranging once Adam's home.

Good luck at Patriot!

So people who have done Patriot and Pumpkinman previously how would you compare the course difficulty for all three different disciplines?

I just saw this thread...much like everlong I just did the Patriot. I'd love to hear a comparison of the two courses. Also - if anyone is going to ride the course, please let me know - I'd like to get a look at it before Sept.

I volunteered at this event a couple of years ago - it is very well organized and run, but the transition from the swim to bike is a pretty significant hill.

Hope to see you all in September!

I've raced both and would say they are similiar. Its been a couple years since I raced Patriot, but here is a quick rundown.

Swim - 2 loops in shallow water, so I would be ready for nonwetsuit. I would also recommend a pair of goggles that are tinted. The sun rises in direct line with the first row of bouys, so can be tough to sight.

BIG hill heading into transition from the water.

Bike - Patriot is flatter (ie;faster) course, but Pman is a fast ride as well. Its rural and the roads are pretty smooth. Pretty much rollers the whole way. Aid stations are well supported. There is one hill that you go up twice, but nothing crazy. You can stay in your saddle and spin up. But other than that, you can stay in your aeros the whole ride. I believe Patriot is 58 miles, so your bike splits should be very similiar.

Run - Best part of the race. Quick track that has quite a few spectators to cheer you on. Its not quite 2 loops, but pretty close so you can see your family/firiends a bunch. There is decent hill at the end which hurts quite a bit. I found the run at Patriot to be very fast, but definitely boring without a lot of specatators. Like the bike, your run splits should be similiar.

The awards/dinner after the race is probably the best I've experienced.

Overall Pumpkinman is a great race. I've done 2 IMs and over 10 Half IMs and this is one of my favorite races to do.

Hope this helps!

This thread is referring to Pumpkinman Sept 9 in Maine. Probably a different one than you are looking at.

now just a few days out and I'm starting to get pretty excited...although the weather gods may not be shining down on us on Sunday...how's everyone feeling? Ready to go? Equipment tuned/tweaked and ready?

I've got a couple more short OWS to do (just to get used to the wetsuit pull on my shoulders again), a quick run and a quick spin on the bike - then I'm ready to go!

See you all out on the course!

Still need to pick the bike up from a tune up at the LBS and pack everything. This week was 15 miles biking, 3 miles running, 1000 yards swimming and 15 minutes on the elliptical and yet I still feel beat up. It's been a long season building up to and doing 2 HIM's. Come Sunday afternoon I'm going to eat like a pig, drink like a fish and train like a bad dog that flunked out of obedience school.

I did the Patriot as well (and had such a good time, I promptly went out and signed up for the Pumpkinman)...you are right - it's made for a LONG season. I am really looking forward to a few weeks of getting up with the kids (instead of 90 minutes before the kids), long slow weekend mornings spent drinking coffee, eating baked goods while reading and general slothitude...I also need to let a recurring foot injury heal before upping my run mileage again.

What wave is everyone in? I'm in the last one (with the pink caps...how fitting). I hadn't really worried about cut-off times until I realized I'm in the last wave - which puts me at the end of the window...I'm sure it will be fine, but I'll be checking my watch constantly (at least until I've started the run)

Any interest in meeting up before/during? I'm intending on checking in on Saturday afternoon. I'm spending the night in Portsmouth...planning on dinner at the Portsmouth Brewery probably around 7pm Saturday if anyone is interested.

If not - best of luck to all...have a great time!

I'm in the red wave which goes out 3rd at 7:03. It's men 19-29 and 35-44 so I'm hoping I don't get punched in the face seeing stars like Patriot.

How'd it go in that massive red-capped wave?  I started in the 2nd to last wave with a small group of women 35-49 in yellow caps.

Hopefully Jennifer did alright in spite of the cut-off times with that last wave of pink-capped ladies!

It was a beautiful day out there, but not a PR season for me... oh well!

Cheers, -Sunny

Actually really well with no issues. I had a good time and the conditions in the water were awesome. No PR for me either but a good race nonetheless.
