Comments: Started toward the back since I'm not a strong swimmer. It was a small race so the contact wasn't bad. Got hit in the head once, brushed against a few times but nothing major. What would you do differently?: Become a swimmer Transition 1
Comments: Small transition area and I'm pretty efficient so this was quick. Bike
Comments: Tried to make sure I was always breathing hard and not slacking. At some point my knees started hurting and I had to back off a bit. My body and hands were never cold but my toes got numb. The weather was perfect. I drank/ate nothing on the bike or run. Perfect since the temps were cool. What would you do differently?: Get bionic knees? Weigh less. Transition 2
Comments: small transition area means fast time Run
Comments: My feet were numb coming off the bike but the rest of me was the perfect temperature. I had a rabbit on the bike and never could catch her. She started pulling away the second half of the bike and I couldn't chase due to knee pain. She gave me good motivation on the run and I finally caught her just past half way. I told her I didn't think I could pass and not have her catch me so I would just run with her. She said she didn't think she could hold this pace. I don't have a Garmin so I asked what this pace was. She said 7:42/mile and I said I don't think I could hold it either but we were, so lets go. She dropped back, I think she was only going that fast to try to keep from being middle aged, pasty white guy dudded :-). What would you do differently?: nothing, I'm thrilled to have my first sub 25 minute 5k in over 20 years. Post race Warm down: Very low key. Had some water and pizza and visited with friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: Leg speed. Last updated: 2012-03-15 12:00 AM |

Breakfast as usual, yogurt, banana, coffee. Decided to stay at home and drive the hour an a half race morning. I had to get up at 4 am Thursday to fly to Canada, Saturday to fly home, and Sunday for this race. Even though I was exhausted, I couldn't sleep for some reason the night before the race and maybe got two hours of sleep.
The drive to the race was fun. Drove into a nice sunrise and drove fast since there wasn't anyone on the roads.
Pictures and more commentary is here http://blog.ransick.org/2012/05/season-opener.html
Swam a little just before the start to get a feel for the water (and pee).
