Subject: I'm a serious cyclist.....apparently!

We were out for a long ride yesterday on the W&OD trail here in Virginia, there was a "Tour for the Cure" event out that was starting some time after we'd headed out.

On our return leg, at a stop sign on the trail, the event staff had set up a rest station, as we pulled up a couple were pointing and chatting:

Women: Damn, look at those guys, they've already hit the turn and are heading back in

Man: yeah but check out the bikes...they're real serious cyclists!!

So to all those who say it's about the engine and not the bike......HAH! even I can look like a real serious cyclist :-)

When you are passed by someone, it is because their bike is faster than yours.

When you pass someone else, it is because of the engine, regardless of how many thousands of $ you have spent on it.

When someone in a refurbished 1991 Pugeot passes you, it is because they are a bicycle courier... they have to be.

This is well established cycling logic.  I do not see the issue here.

Awesome. I always say when I'm out running long distances and someone on the trail passes me `He's probably only doing a couple miles. I'm pacing myself.' rather than `He's fast!'

Absolutely.  Which is what I said to the guy on the mountain bike that passed me going up hill this weekend.  "it's those tires. You've got faster tires!"  (he was riding big fat knobbies and I was on my TT bike)

Two very good excuses - I also use:

"I'm pacing down on this ride as I've overloaded this week"

"this is a recovery ride for me"

"I'm testing a new fit"

I think they frown on riding fast on the W&OD trail anyway... built in excuse right there.

I'd like to hammer a section of it sometime was thinking the section from 28 to Leesburg at an "off time".

I ride Claiborne to Purcellville at the start and end of my Sunday rides, it's actually a pretty good section and at 6am Sunday morning no-one is out there.  From 28 all out to Purcellville you can hammer it that early on a Sunday.

Even when it's busy, weekday commute etc from Ashburn to Herndon I can get my head down and push it.  Not sure I would mid-day on a weekend though :-)

at my last race, I was in the elevator afterwards with an older couple. the wife saw my number and said, "look, he has a six hundred number" I looked at her like what??? and She said, "oh nothing, he just said those guys in the 600 numbers were flying past him on the bike"

First time I have heard that!  I Loved it!
