Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Tri-ing for Children's Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread It's a very easy course. I was big-ring the whole way on the bike course, though there are some rather minor ups and downs. Run is very flat, but I don't remember if it went into the dirt trail at all. I dropped after the bike because of calf soreness. Be ready for a non-wetsuit swim though. It was non-wetsuit last year and is likely for this year as well with how things have been going. They did allow, but for no prize. Sprint & Olympic are largely the same, Olympic just does it all twice. |

Member 54 Kenosha | Subject: RE: Tri-ing for Children's Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread I'm in for the second Oly of my tri career and my third tri ever. If it's no wetsuit I'll probably drown. Better hit the pool pretty hard over the next month. Hope we get good weather and not too hot. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Tri-ing for Children's Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread They have "swim buddies", but I think that's only for the sprint. With the two laps for the Oly, there is the potential to get a quick break when you get back near the start. It's a shallow lead out and you might be able to get your feet down for a sec. I could have walked about half the sprint swim (seriously). ETA: Oh, and go after it with your swim training. The wetsuit should give you a boost in performance, but it should not be a decision maker in whether you do the distance. That's what you're shooting for now. Edited by brigby1 2012-06-28 10:06 AM |

Since I doubt that I'll place anyway I would still wear one. Did they ever say no wetsuits period? |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Tri-ing for Children's Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Last year, no. It was in that optional area. It was nice swimming without one. A sleeveless would have been ok, but a full-sleeve would have been rather hot. An Olympic can be long enough that this should be taken into consideration. Especially if you're not one of the really fast ones. It was rather cool right away, but it heated up real fast last year. It is July. |

Member 54 Kenosha | Subject: RE: Tri-ing for Children's Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread I've been doing the swimming and my last open water swim (no wetsuit and I did have a too lose fitting top that may have caused some drag) was 1 mile at 40 minutes. Nothing to brag about for certain, but this is my first year at this stuff and... I did not drown. Hope to keep pushing the swims for two more weeks right up to the Tuesday before the race and then throttle back to shorter swims, all non wetsuit because for me it truly is a crutch. My form is the issue and the wetsuit hides the bad form. The key for me so far is just don't push as hard as I do when in the wetsuit and to also remember to sink my chest as much as possible, look down towards the lake bottom (chin to my chest) and roll to air sideways, don't lift my head. Head lifting causes my legs and hips to sink and I lose speed every time I do this and when I sight. So looking forward to the race. See you all there. Regards, John |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Tri-ing for Children's Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Fun day. Did ok. I didn't taper, or even take it easy yesterday, so I guess that should be expected. Still managed to go under 1 hr on the bike in spite of being well off power target, and also broke 40 min for the run. |

This was my first tri without one and it showed. It was a great enue and hope to do it again! |

You know, most might think that about the wetsuit use, but I think you did good not to wear it because now you have a better idea of where you're at. I could have worn mine and picked up one of the overall awards, but that would have messed up one of the big points of doing this race. Now I have a better idea of how I'll do in a race setting without it (and how I'm swimming in general), something that is a very likely possibility in the next couple races. Considering they're both HIMs, that will be rather significant. |

You could try not stopping for some pizza in transition! lol. Race was great overall. Yea, a wetsuit made my race a bit faster. If I can wear one on race day, I will. I've been doing most of my training without one. If the race were any longer, I probably would have opted not to wear it. I was pretty warm coming out of the water. The far end of the lake w/ the sandbar got me really warm. I was glad the whole far side wasn't like that. |
