Subject: 910xt question
My Garmin 910 does this thing where, when my heart rate drops down to what it has decided is my “recovery rate” it automatically stops the timer.

That tends not to matter most of the time because it’s usually at the end of a workout or at the end of a race when I’ve already stopped the timer anyway.

Yesterday, during my HIM, I dropped my chain on a hill and in the minute or so it took me to stop, get off to the side, flip the bike over and reset the chain, my HR dropped down to the recovery rate. At that point, unbeknownst to me, the timer stopped and didn’t resume until I noticed it a few miles down the road and re-started it manually.

Does anyone know how to make it stop doing this?

Mine doesn't do this, but you can try to manually set a lower recovery HR in the settings and HR zones.  Otherwise I would call garmin, I'm sure there's a fix for it.

The watch has an 'auto pause' feature. Looks like yours is turned on and set to use heart rate. It should be in your settings somewhere, but the setting you're looking for is called 'auto pause.' You should be able to find it and turn it off pretty easily.

I have the auto pause set on my bike to speed--it pauses when I go below 2 mph, so it's not that.

I've had problems with autopause in the past - mine is kept shut off now.

Does auto pause work for you otherwise?

I have had the same problem on a number of occasions. I found this description of the Recovery Heart Rate function on their website. It does not explain why the watch pauses but does explain why it pops up from time to time.

Recovery Heart Rate is your heart's ability to return to a normal rate after an activity within a specific amount of time. In general, a faster heart rate (HR) recovery (HR slowing down) from an activity is an indication of an improved fitness level. It is suggested to consult a physician if you continuously see your HR dropping less than 12 beats-per-minute (BPM) within one-minute of stopping an activity.

The Forerunner 910XT, 610, or 310XT will display your recovery heart rate (as shown below) two minutes after the Start/Stop button is pressed. The number outside the parenthesis is your current HR, while the number in parenthesis is the difference between your HR at the end of your activity and your Recovery HR.

The below picture shows the runner's HR was 154 BPM at the end of the activity. Two minutes later the HR was 125 BPM, which was a 29 BPM drop after two minutes.

If the Recovery Heart Rate message does not appear on your Forerunner 910XT or 310XT, refer to myDashboard to update your device's operating software.

x2 I love the idea of auto pause but it seems to screw things up everytime I try and use it.

When that screen pops up for recovery heart rate just hit the enter button to clear it and the watch will record just fine after that. Somethimes you have to push the enter button twice to clear it from the screen.

My recovery HR screen has never come on unless I've hit the stop button.  I've used this in run mode, bike mode and multisport mode.  Not once have I had an issue in 200+ sessions.

The "more than 12 beats a minute" recovery issue that suggests calling your physician seems off though.  It would make sense that the first few minutes after stopping, your HR will come down much quicker than 12 beats / min.  The real problem as I understand it, is when it doesn't come down.  I'll leave that for the cardiologists out there to clarify.

I find it annoying when I'm biking and going down hill it pops up!

I would like to turn it off, but I can't find the way.

It looks like I have the Minimum and Maximum Heart rate alerts off?!
