Trying to plan a vacation for Yellowstone and Grand Teton area and I'm just looking for some suggestions on which airport to fly in to, places to stay, etc. Wife and parents are going so I we are looking for a decent cabin for 5. Probably looking at going in June/July of 13.

Thanks

There is an airport at Jackson, WY but I flew into SLC and drove up because I try and stick with Southwest personally.  You can stay in Jackson and hit them all but Yellowstone is a 2 hour or so drive to main part of the park.  I was up in off-season so some stuff was closed and it was a short visit.  You can get to Glacier also which is not too much further north of Yellowstone.  Beautiful area!

I am sure others can provide more insight into activities.

Uh, no on the bolded part.  Yellowstone and Glacier are like 450 miles apart.  I guess it depends on your definition of "not too much further north."  One is at the bottom of the state, and the other is at the top.  For Yellowstone, you could also fly into Bozeman (very close to one of the entrances).  It might be cheaper than flying into Jackson.

ETA for search purposes:  Jackson is in Wyoming.  Bozeman is in Montana.

I saw the airports there and then Idaho Falls, but I'm not sure what kind of traffic Idaho Falls has or how big it is.

Thanks

I can't help you on the flying in part because we drove there.

I'd recommend staying at the Old Faithful Inn.  Its right in the middle of a ton of geysers and there's a lot of stuff going on there as well as amenities.

Make sure you get a comfortable car for your family because you will be doing a LOT of driving through the park.  We spent one full day driving around the north loop (stopping at the major sites) and one full day driving the south loop.

The south loop is about 100 miles around and the north loop is around 70 miles.

I am headed that way in a couple of weeks. My daughter and I are flying into SLC (because of free ticket on SWA) and spending the night on the way up. We booked too late and are staying in West Yellowstone (again - Holiday Inn points). Hoping to spend 2 full days in Yellowstone and then drive south to Jackson, WY for a night before heading back to SLC to head home.

One thing we realized was that we allotted too much time for Yellowstone. Next time we would spend more time in GT. Yellowstone is a beautiful place and the sights are amazing, but it is a drive and park the car place. Meaning you can access most of the stuff from parking lots after a minimal walk. Finding parking spots can be tough too. The GT's are more of a longer hike type of place, which suits us better. Be sure to book a river float trip in the Tetons!

We flew into Jackson Hole.

We flew into Bozeman for Yellowstone (from CT).  For what its worth, we went in the winter and cross country skied in the park (this was several years ago).  Not crowded and once you got away from the main road, you didnt hear the snowmobiles.  It was a different way to experience the park and we really enjoyed it.  Still saw Old FF, and still went to the Falls (the ice around them was spectacular), but a different perspective for sure.

If you fly into Idaho Falls, it is a large enough town but not huge....very minimal traffic driving to Yelowstone (about 2.5-3hrs). There are plenty of places to stay outside the gaits that are likely cheaper. Just a little extra driving but plenty of choices of resteraunts in town...at least in the town of West Yellowstone. Main thing is make your reservations early.

Heading there in 7 weeks! So excited! I'm flying into Jackson - it's convenient, but you won't have an overly large plane going in there and it can get windy. Last time I flew in the person behind me puked. I'm hoping things go a bit better this time.

Love the area, both the Tetons and Yellowstone have a lot to do - I could spend hours buffalo watching. If you're staying in the area, especially in the summer, look into booking lodging soon as things can fill up rather quickly.

Enjoy!

My husband and I went to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons last year...loved it and moved to Montana (about 3 hours away from Yellowstone though) a couple weeks ago. Flights into Bozeman were a lot cheaper for us. The drive to Yellowstone is about 2 hours or so and very, very scenic. We stayed in a cabin in Grand Teton (we liked the Tetons a lot better than YS). We stayed in the "cheaper" cabins at Colter Bay. Basic, but totally servicable and well worth being actually in the park and close to rafting in Jackson Hole etc. We also stayed a night at a fairly cheap, but also decent cabin in West Yellowstone for a night. If you are into wildlife/scenery I highly reccommend taking some long walks on the gravel roads closed to traffic in Grand Teton. Plan on doing a LOT of driving. We stayed 10 days and drove 1500 on the rental car taking in all the scenery.
