Age Group Rank = 4/39
Pre-race routine:

So Cindy and I had made a deal that we weren't making any hotel reservations for sprints this year. So I drove from Cypress to College Station for both packet pickup on Saturday and the race Sunday morning. So it was out of bed at 3:30, threw down a PB sandwich and a banana and I was out the door. It's an hour and fifteen minute drive up to Aggieland and I sipped on some Perform all the way up. Got there, parked the car and headed to transition. Setting up for a sprint takes 5 minutes so I got marked, grabbed my timing chip, and chilled out until it was time to go to the pool.
Event warmup:

The organizers didn't see fit to let you in the pool to warm up so got a good quarter mile jog in.
Swim
  • 08m 27s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

I haven't done a pool swim in a long time. I forgot how important it is to seed yourself aggressively. I heard several people around me comment about how they haven't done the distance in a while and were going off old data or guesstimating. I knew I was in trouble. Spend the majority of the race passing folks. Most who disregarded swimming on the right and made it hard to get around them.
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Lots of gravel on the way to T1. Somewhat painful and it slowed you down a bit.
Bike
  • 31m 28s
  • 12 miles
  • 22.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Could have gone a little harder. I had some friends who drove the course the day before tell me there was gravel in every corner. Me and gravel don't have a fond history so I took a few of the corners in the first lap way too cautiously. Should have picked a line and hammered it.
What would you do differently?:

Sell out in the corners
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Fumbled with just about everything here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I'm clumsy by nature and I'm going to have days like this. It happens.
Run
  • 23m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I've been training distance and bringing my aerobic heart rate down. It took me 2 miles to find a rhythm here. Then I felt like I left time on the course. I was not as spent as I should have been by the finish line. Grr.
What would you do differently?:

Push it harder out of T2 and force myself into the cadence I want.
Post race
Warm down:

Headed back out onto the run course to find my teammates and cheer them into the finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. Might need to do some speed work on the run, but ultimately I'm looking at the best finish I can do in my next HIM so that is truly the focus.

Event comments:

Honestly really liked this race. Liked the people, the communication leading up to, during and after. Also the course is awesome. Some of the imperfections in the bike surface really weren't their fault. It's on a college campus during the summer and there is a ton of construction. It's just a byproduct. I'd definitely do this race again, and this is coming from someone who had sworn off pool swims.

Excellent job.  Though I have nothing to compare it with I really liked it and felt like it was well organized other than the hellish landscape we had to traverse in transition barefooted.  My experience which will be forthcoming was not as good as yours.

I grossly overestimated my swimming abilities.  Survived to learn a valuable lesson, and will move forward a better competitor because of it.

It happens man.  You live, you learn, and you do better next go 'round.  The guy who does most of the high profile races in Houston has carpets that lead from the water to transition so I'm spoiled.
