I'm reading his book on trying be be healthy (Drop Dead Healthy), and he talks about triathlon at one point:

"At the start of my project, I'd considered a triathlon, but dismissed it. I'd even watched a few YouTube videos on triathlons, including one that purported to be a motivational video. It featured stumbling runners collapsing on the road and convulsing. There was a woman on a stretcher. With an IV in her arm. That kind of motivation does not work on me. When I watch Saw III, I don't say to myself, "Hey, I really want to be chained up in a sociopath's basement". Same idea."

I don't think anyone is motivated to be that struggling, staggering person crossing the finish line. We probably all wish to cross the line with a smile on our face with head and arms held high. The motivation and drive is figuring out how tough you are mentally and physically if/when you get to that point when you want to give up.

I'm currently cycling through some of the Beachbody workout routines (Insanity/Asylum/Body Beast) along with some triathlon stuff. Visually I am more fit, and lung capcity I feel more fit with general activity and s/b/r than I did when I was IM tri training last year. But, its just not the same as having that end goal and struggle on the horizon that makes you bust it everyday s/b/r.
