So my first tri is next Wens it's a short sprint tri. A practice series put on by the local tri club here in portland.  300 yard swim, 10 mile bike and 2 mile run. I feel very confident at all these distances.

I've done a little open water practice, but I haven't practiced in my wetsuit yet. I'm going to a group OWS this thurs put on by the local Tri club in Portland. But I'd like to get at least one more OWS in before the big event maybe 2 over the weekend.

Where do people recommend swimming if doing a solo OWS?

I strongly recommend swimming as many times as you can in your wetsuit before your race.  I had a real hard time feeling like I couldn't catch my breath in my wetsuit and ended up not using it which made the swim more of a struggle than it should have been.  Plus it is quite the experience swimming with other people so close to you in open water.  I swim along the shore line in a lake near me early in the morning, no boats to worry about.  Good luck and have fun, my first was a great learning experience and have already signed up for my second race.

Not the greatest idea to swim alone but, yes....close to shore.

If there are people around on the shore or in the water, tell them to jump on your back, swim in front of you, grab your feet/legs/arms/face, tell them to kick you whenever they feel like it and at random times and spots. That way you'll be ready for an OWS.

Agree that not.best idea to swim alone but if you must practice more with wetsuit.

Good idea to have another person to fight off badgers and beavers if encounter them.

Also Athletes Lounge is putting there group swim on every Thursday at Cathedral Pk up to the Portland Tri.

Just swim close to shore along a stretch of beach.

It's not really a big deal and people really overemphasize the dangers involved (although they do exist).  Just stay within your comfort zone and if you have a little voice in your head saying "This is not a good idea" - listen to it and get out.

Also, there are probably plenty of inlets, bays, sheltered spaces, etc that you can swim in with a lot less current, waves, etc.

If you really want to get a feel for the OWS start, here is a short video. Recruit your friends to help...

IN Texas we ahve swimming areas in the lake, do ya'll ahve that too?

I would stay away from lake shores, as this is where poisenous snakes are home!
