Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread

I live at sea level in Southern California, but am about 1-1/4 hours away from access to altitude.  I have a friend who has a cabin at 7,000 feet and I expect to spend a lot of time up there.  He says there is a stretch of road from the town to his cabin that is four miles long with 1300 feet of gain, so I think that will work well.  In any event, I don't plan to start working on altitude until next April.  I am planning to go up to Lake Tahoe in May or June and ride the course and swim in the lake, just for some calibration.

I looked into the tent system and it is just too expensive for me.  Being among the slowest of the IM athletes, I can't quite justify the expense. 

And yes, it is a beautiful venue.

This will be #5 for me.  I'm pretty excited about the venue, but not the lack of oxygen. 

I need to get through Vineman this weekend before I start to focus on this one.

IM #3 for me.  I'll likely spend time in the north Cascade range near Mazama to train for altitude.  Never thought about altitude tents or masks... Might be worth taking a gander once IM Canada is over.

ETA: Looks like we're a pretty experinced group here.  Do you think the elevation scared away most of the first timers?

#4 for me and #5 for hubby.

Can't wait - will try to get up there to train a bit, but it probably won't be often.  The hills don't scare me much, but the altitude does!

Does the air density negate this?  Maybe a better way to put it is do we need less watts to achieve the same speed because the air is less dense 6,000 feet?

It may offset it, speedwise a bit.  But you still want to be careful on your power output so you don't kill yourself on the run.  Well, unless you live in Colorado or something

Tahoe will be IM#3 for me - (Canada 09, CDA, 11).  Working on half IMs this season....

Tahoe is beautiful. Used to live in SF and go mt biking in Tahoe all the time.  I told my husband that I don't remember the altitude being that bad...he said - yeah, well you weren't doing 140.3 miles and we took the chairlift up the mt.

i am doing the 1 mile swim on Friday and then doing at least one loop of the bike course.  Sat going to do the 72 mile bike, then Sunday doing the 1/2 marathon.

hopefully this will give me an idea of what the race might feel like so I can obsess all year.

As an FYI, I just noticed Google Street View has most of the bike route, so you can look at the route.  The scenery should be spectacular.  I have also mapped one loop into MapMyRide - was curious on actual grades on the route - the basic route is attached.

Thanks for that.  I was beginning to wonder if they had posted it yet.  I want to check out the competition in my AG, as I'm aging up next year.  Should be a competitive new group (30-34).

So it's official!  Love the age listings......it's not your USAT age, it's your race-day age.  They WILL change it for bibs and results and such, but with an October birthday, I get to be listed at 49 for the whole year that it's up.....even though I'll be racing as 50!!  Woot!
