Subject: Nikon D800

I recently acquired the new Nikon D800 and thought I'd share it's amazing resolution capabilities.

The D800 is a 36MP full frame DSLR. The samples below show the original image and a highly cropped version. As you can see there is practically no loss of detail at all, even at the extreme crop.

That's amazing Peby.  I've heard great things about this camera.  I also know it's hard to get because of the earthquake.  I'm going to show the photographers in my studio your example...

I know nothing about photography, but love this photo. Can I ask a dumb question. What do I have to spend to get a dslr that takes a photo as instantly as my dads dustly old Nikon fe28 film cmera from the 70's ? I have a d80 in a camera bag that has range finder and lens mount problems so Im thinking of a new camera, or film for the old timers camera.

Nikkor 28-300 3.5/5.6 This lens is not a usual choice for pro photographers but I love it for it's versatility. Yes it's slow but quite sharp. btw - this was hand held too.

about 2 years ago I got my Nikon D5000 with 2 lenses for about $500 on sale. It is still going strong though I do need to get some additional lenses. I can sometimes push its ability to capture images to the edge but it has always gotten me the picture I needed.

According to Nikon's website the D800 runs about $3k for what thats worth.

Also I love that picture

Since you already have Nikon lenses, have a look at Nikon's new D3200. I believe they are selling for around $700

Peby, you've inspired me to dust off an old "Slower" lens..  I've been spoiled with f2.8 lenses and I have an f1.4 on my radar...

P.S>  My co-workers love the resolution..  My try to get a d800 for the studio..

Paul did you jump right from the D300 to the 800 or have you used a 700/D3 at all?

That is cropped in VERY tightly, any CA you could not see in a normal photo or cropped a bit is going to show up that close in

Yes, D300 to 800 I was thinking of getting the 700 but at that time I felt the 800 was going to be released... that was over a year ago.

Yes, I did not correct the CA, just did a straight crop. Shot wide open.

While I"m not a Nikon shooter, I love seeing some the  Landscape guys that use this camera.  The DR is awesome.

Is yours (or is it even out yet) the one without the AA filter??
