Visit BT and float-troll the forums. Been at it for an hour and a half, researching things I won't be able to afford for at least five months.

I picked my research topic on what the relationship is between listener and musician in sound, not including words--using music as a supplement to enhance plays--rhetorical analysis of said music.

I don't know a thing about music theory, but I do know how to play an acoustic guitar. I mean damn. This is hard.

Not a musician either but music is huge in setting a mood. Just think how different Star Wars would be without the musical score. There are many others that's just the first to come to mind. Not much help but I love all kinds of music and I can't imagine movies and plays without it.

Not only music but sounds in general. Watch a scary movie or a movie such as Jaws in mute and you will not come close to getting the full effect. The score sets up the scene.

Not quite about plays and music, but think of how music therapy is gaining popularity with the elderly and the mentally/physically challenged.  Music has a way of bridging gaps and connecting people or sometimes, just connecting oneself.

So how is your paper going?

I think the relationship is sexual (not that I continuously have that on the brain or anything like that). The musician creates an extension of him/her self that physically enters and pleasurably (one would hope, but there's all kinds of music and sex) affects the listener.

I think there was a music theorist who wrote about this in regard to opera (that it is particularly so). But I think it applies to all music. There is a deliberate creation of a relationship whereby one is the giver of pleasure/music and one (or many, hmmm) is the recipient. What's lovely is that in doing so, the giver--the musician--experiences simultaneous pleasure in the giving, as well as self-pleasure because s/he listens also.

Don't take this analogy too far. Just food for thought.
