Subject: Goals for the upcoming year?

I was just talking to mrs gearboy yesterday about this - I don't think so much about them as resolutions as I do goals - in part, because I never know if I want to continue to do whatever it is. One year, I set a summer goal (May through Labor Day) of seeing the top grossing new movie each week - I would go to what I thought would be the "winner" on Friday or Saturday, and then check the stats on Monday - if I had guessed wrong, I would then catch the "right" one on Monday or Tuesday night - I saw a LOT of movies (good and bad) that year. Last year, I did a "project 365", taking a photo every day (usually more than one). This year, I set out to ride my motorcycle at least once every month. Mrs. gearboy, who is big fan of minimalist living (and yet, she married to ME!), is planning to throw out at least one thing every day (she was inspired by a blog she read) for 2013.

I am planning to scan in all our old photo albums - I realized I could tell when I got my first digital camera when I was going through the albums so I could put the years on the spines of them and order them more easily. There were some years with lots of photos, some with relatively few; and then they pretty much stopped in 2002- when I went digital and started curating my photos on the computer instead. There are about a dozen albums (counting some of the smaller albums, like my racing album and a couple of specific trip albums), which makes it fit nicely into a year long goal.

What are your goals for the year? Anyone else interested in keeping tabs on progress on the goals for the year?

Goal #1 - While staying with a friend for my marathon, I was inspired by all the knitting she has been doing.  My new goal/hobby, learn to knit.  I hope to get good enough that I can do a few scarves and perhaps a couple of hats.  I LOVE baby alpaca, and it's SO MUCH cheaper to make your own, than buy.  (hats and scarves MADE of baby alpaca fur, not the baby alpacas!!)  I'm already half way through with a scarf that is just straight knit.

Goal #2 - Learn the guitar and teach my kids.  Each week I hope learn two lessons and teach at least one to my two kids and the neighbor kid in the mornings before school.  Considering the kiddo got his guitar for Christmas LAST year, this may be a challenge.

I look at it this way.  Let's choose "stopping smoking".

A resolution means I stopped and will not smoke again.

A goal means I plan to stop smoking this year.

But it's all shades of gray.

I'm going to open a gym called "Resolutions". The first 2 weeks there will be gym equipment in there, then after that I'll sell donuts in the morning and beer and pizza at night.

i go to planet fitness, where they brag about giving out tootsie rolls every day and free pizza the first monday night of every month.  what?!!?

but, i can't argue with $99/year.

Hahaha - my sister goes there. She jokes about how it's supposed to be a "judgement free zone" but when she watches people eat the free pizza, she judges.

Can't blame her - or them, for eating free pizza.

Awesome! This was my new hobby in 2008, and I love it. Part of my 'goal' is to make more time for it this year. I barely picked up my needles last year, I didn't complete one project!

I'm doing 365 days of workouts. At least SOMETHING every day. And related, I started a blog about it to keep me accountable. I'm not good about logging workouts and if I keep myself accountable to at least the internet full of strangers, I'll be more successful. So. There it is.

Replacing the calendar on the wall, rather than just turning a page, always yields some kind of looking forward/looking ahead reaction. Resolutions? I've always figured that if it's the day that triggers that kind of a goal, that it won't last long. Anyway, I've gathered up some plans for the coming year, developed over the last several months. Call them goals or resolutions if you like.

* Make a long run/hike of the Crystal Mountain basin in one day. No idea how long that is, but it'll be an epic day. Planned for late spring or early summer.

* In September, when I turn 50, I plan to do an epic tri training day, what amounts to 5xsprint distance (150K). Though I'm not going to run 15 miles. I'll tack those extra miles onto the bike ride. 2.5 mile swim, 80 mile bike, 10 mile run. No pace goals, just make it a fun, solo training day.

* Start bike frame building.

Do they limit the amount of pizza you can eat?

here's the math on that......$100/year and free pizza once a month. That works out to a little under $9 a month. I can eat a TON of pizza to easily get my $9 worth. then the working out's free. That's how my inner-fat kid looks at that. Not the other way around.

Can I run on the treadmill and eat my pizza at the same time?

i have never been to a free pizza night, so i don't know, it's the busiest night of the month at the gym.  if i ate pizza while running on the treadmill i'd throw up all over...

ps.  i judge ALL THE TIME at pf.  all the "no judgment zone" signs are like...forcing me to judge more than i normally would.  i can't help it.

My middle son gave me a cross stitch that he did for me earlier. That has inspired me to learn to do that, so he went with me and bought me one that I liked and got me started.  One of the things I like about it is that it isn't a mindless activity; I actually have to pay attention.

He also completely redid my flute (he's a band instrument repair tech) for Christmas.  It was so sweet when I played it that I'm considering finding a couple of beginner books and re-teaching myself.

I have a marathon training plan that starts in February and I want to continue to run the trails.
