Subject: Hi from NC

Hello to all. Says to introduce myself, so here I am!  Little about me, I'm 55 years old and will be running my first triathlon March 23rd.  A little over a year ago I started out at 351 pounds, at 54 my doctor told me if I didn't change my lifestyle she didn't think I'd make it to my next birthday (made a liar out of her).   Anyhow, I decided I had enough, made a commitment to change my lifestyle, get off my a** and get healthy for my grandchildren.  Today I'm 176 pounds, no gimmick diets, no surgeries, no starvation, eating healthy foods and exercise.  I used to take a handful of pills every morning just to keep my blood pressure high instead of astronimcally hig, statins for chlesterol, antacids (Prevacid) for the acid reflux from the crap I was stuffing in my face and pre-diabetic.  Today, I take no prescription meds of anykind and feel better than I've felt in decades! Laughing

351 to 176 at 54.  That's incredible.  Really man.

Well welcome to BT.  You have lots to offer from your weight-loss experience.  But if you have questions going into your first tri, feel free to drop me a PM or check-in on the TriTalk board.  You can search for a topic or just start a thread if you don't see one that answers your question.  People here are great about helping beginners even though we have all levels of triathletes.  We have people who just started (true Beginner Triathletes) up to people who run multiple Iron-distance races in a year (some in a day).  Pros drop-in from time to time to give inspires and respond when we're bashing them as well.  It's a really great community and you'll get lots of support.

If anyone can epitomize the wide-range of people doing this sport, it's clearly you!

Best of luck to you.  Be Safe and let us know how we can help you reach the finish line on March 23rd!

Thanks for the welcome!   I'd be lying if I said it wasn't hard to do.  But well worth the effort.    I'm excited about doing my first triathlon, waaaaay back in the Navy I did a lot of distance running, then came marriage, domestication, kids, grandkids, yada yada next thing I know I'm over 300 pounds.   When the doctor dropped the diabetes word on me I knew it was time to turn it around.

Thanks.  Some really good people have helped me along the way and I'm forever grateful to them.   I'm doing the Sampson County Super Spring March 23rd.   I've been training and working towards this for a year, I feel like I'm ready.  I've set up a course at Campbell Univerisity to practice and I can "comfortably" do the distances. (Comfortable being a relative term).  Since this is my first triaathlon, I'm going to take it nice and easy, really just trying to figure out how it flows, get my logistics down and for the most part not be a nuisance to others and trying to stay out of the way of people that know what they are doing.   I'm thinking I might run a 5k in Raleig on February 23rd, just to get  used to running in a crowd and to work on pacing myself in a crowd.   Swimming is going to be the hardest, I've been swimming in the Campbell Natatorium, the distance isn't the problem but for the life of me I can't get any better in the time. I've shaved minutes of my run and bike times but after all this time I've only gotten 10 seconds better in the swim.  Not that I'd be competitive in the first place but it's a personal issue and goal for me.

Way to go! Just wanted to say hello since I'm a born and bred North Carolinian (live in Oregon now though).  I'll look forward to hearing about your first Tri...I'm sure with the determination you clearly have that you'll do great!

That's great stuff Bull.  I wouldn't worry about being in people's way.  They'll go around.  But in the swim, you may want to start to the outside just to avoid the churn.  Definitely sign-up for the 5K because you start to get rid of the pre-race jitters.  I think that's really important to staying relaxed in the swim.  Even a Sprint distance requires a measure of pacing (unless you're one of the speedsters on here).

I wrestled for The Citadel so I actually wrestled against the Camels back in the day.  Good Baptist college.  Just to warn you, the women swim in the same place as the men at the Tri

I know that was one thing I thought was interesting was the separate pools when I wrestled there.

Best of luck to you Bull!

Thanks.  I'm from WV originally, married a Carolina Girl that after 20 years living in Washington DC, she'd had enough and wanted to come back home to mama! So here we are.

That's what I'm thinking. I do have some experience in road races from many years back.  Thanks for the encouragement.  If you haven't been to Campbell lately, you'll notice quite a few changes, first is they have co-ed dorms now (or what passes for co-ed dorms in a Southern Baptist University anyhow). Still won't play any sports on Sundays, they have a football team now (not a very good one but a football team.  They have a new head coach for next season, Mike Minter from Carolina Panther will be the football head coach next season.
