They didn't get lured away by the piles of cash. Love it! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't understand Smart. I get the attraction of making a mid-major a powerhouse (UCONN) but do you fear exposing yourself if you're not there in year 3? He could jump to a Minnesota or the like and really have access to top programs, schedule and talent. Don't get it... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Big news here in ABQ...I can't believe he jumped ship after signing a 10 yr extension less than 2 weeks ago. Pathetic. Oh, and his son, who is a really good player, signed with UNM recently too. Wonder if he backs out as well? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() (shrugs shoulders) I would think the UCLA could have gotten someone better. It seems to me they were just interested in moving as quickly as possible. (shrugs shoulders) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As a UK fan, this is exactly what happened in 08, when UK kinda/sorta told Tubby to walk without firing him and then choices A through probably M turned them down. Got stuck with Gillespie to save face and that sucked. I think Howland and Smith were similar. 10 years at school. Good bit of initial success, but stale in the last couple of years. Although the fans still cared and came to games here in KY. The way UCLA fills Pauley is downright embarrassing. And in regards to Shaka or Stevens: you can coach mid major for 20 years, make the tournament 15 out of those years, make the Sweet 16 5 times and maybe get an Elite 8 or Final Four once and they will put up a statue and put your name on the building. Minnnesota is firing coaches for making the tournament 2 years in a row. Please reread that last sentence. One more time. They didn't fire their hockey coach for being just slightly above average....they fired their hoops coach!!! Now they wonder why they can't get anyone to take the gig. So, 20 years making around a million per or 3-5 years getting 2 mil before you get canned? Thats the choice. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Decent hire, not an earth shaking one by any means.
Basically, not sure there was a better option available. Basically we will get a younger Howland, minus the oddly timed time outs and with a far better grasp of off the court player management. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not sure Alford is that guy. His NCAA tourney success, or more correctly lack there of, isn't gonna make many folks happy. Just saw a stat on Sportscenter about his propensity to lose in round of 64 as a top 3 seed. And he didn't really set the world on fire at Iowa either. |

Billy Donovan and Pitino are doing just fine where they are and their universities are paying quite well.
I think this was an odd choice for UCLA too. I wonder if they were trying to get someone for a bargain and basically insulted the tier one coaches on the list? With coaching you get what you pay for.

Smart is getting talent as good or better than Minnesota where he's at now. This isn't football, being in a power conference isn't the be-all/end-all it is in D1 football. Guys like Stevens, Smart, & Few can bring in quality talent without being part of the bigger conferences. That said, I think Shaka will eventually take a bigger job, but he has the luxury of waiting for the right gig. He keeps producing like this at VCU and one of the blue bloods will come calling eventually when guys like K, Izzo, Boeheim start retiring. |

Minnesota didn't make the tournament 2 years in a row (they were in the NIT last year). Tubby Smith never finished above 6th in the Big Ten and never had a winning conference record. Everybody who follows the Gophers knew that it was time to move on. |

I was thinking about Royce White from Minny and not Royce White from ISU after the transfer. |

Maybe coaches aren't all about money |
