Subject: Best Alternative to Running?

I've just been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and my doc has told me to take a complete break from running for a few weeks.

My question - what's the best alternative exercise that will preserve as much of my running fitness as possible?

Will increasing my bike work do it? (I could certainly fit more cycling into my training schedule)

Or should be I doing something like the elliptical machine at the gym?

Something else?

Thanks for your advice.

Aqua-jogging is probably as good as you can do.  But, if training for triathlon, I always think you are better off putting the added time into your swim and bike.  You will lose some run fitness, regardless.  So improving your swim & bike fitness now, and then working on your run fitness when you are able, is likely to lead to better tri racing down the road.

A triathlete, Dr. Eric Bean, who was in med school at Wisconsin trained 95% for 6 months on his Computrainer...no running or swimming for an IM in 2009 I think.  He PR'd at 8:29.  The biggest bang for the buck, in his opinion, is training like a 40K TT at just above Lactate Threshhold, regardless of your race distance.  High intensity hour to 1-1/2 hour sessions are important.  Keep in mind, thats coming from a natural athlete with high level running skills already built.

Personally, I'd pool run. But I already ride plenty, and I don't swim, so boosting my training in those two areas isn't that essential.

Had same thing a few months ago, I did maintain and improve in my swimming and biking. Aqua jogging for sure was great. I would change it up between putting on resitance floats on my ankles/wrists or the belt. after 30 mins I was sweatin in the pool!! Good luck

I found it difficult to aqua jog with pf. The pushing off from the toes caused higher stress and pain on the plantar tendon than normal jogging. Everytime the toes dorsiflexed it was like a knife in the heel. Swim and bike were fine.

I'm with everyone else here.  Dump all your run time into either your swim or bike.   If its only a few weeks, it won't take long to get the run fitness back and you can better improve one of the other legs.

Should have clarified...I "Jog" in a dive well, never touching the floor. Great for core workout too

A big coaching group recommends taking run time splitting it in half and add half to more cycling and other half to deep water running in the pool.
