Subject: Boston Clock Question

I've seen several people say they finished around 4:12, just before the blast.  However in the videos the finish clock reads 4:09.

Why the discrepancy?  I could understand if the finish clock was MORE than their time (clock vs chip time).  But why is it LESS?

I am curious too since a member of my running club had less than 20 secs finish like to when the bomb went off.

A friend and I were talking about this earlier; engineers just can't leave these things alone.

I might have figured it out; the BAA site says that wave 3 (last wave) starts at 10:40 AM.


Doing the math, the news said that the first blast happened around 2:50 PM.  Set that against clock time of 4:09 (as seen in the video) and count back to that clock time of 00:00, and I got 10:41, close enough to speculate that the clock time pictured was the wave 3 clock time.

So you could have started in the back of wave 2 (start time of 10:20) and had a higher time than the clock time.

According to wikipedia, this is correct.  The clock was set to wave 3.

When would they have changed the clock to be based off wave 2 and then wave 3?

I went through at about 1:30pm and I am pretty sure it was still displaying the time for wave 1.

Ah, did not know they reset the clocks based on waves.  Makes sense.

Actually, they have multiple arches for crossing the finish line.  You can go under any you want, but they tell you which one has the clock for your wave.  I believe the middle one is First Wave.  The one to the right is 2nd wave and the one to the left is 3rd wave.

So 3 clocks each set differently.  The one shown, left as runners approach the finish, was the 3rd wave clock.
