Total Time = 1h 30m 25s
Overall Rank = 9/180
Age Group = Male 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/15
Pre-race routine:

Drove down from home to the Gulf. Temperature was about 45 when I arrived with a stiff North wind. Picked up packet, set up transition...BRR! Visited with friend and teammates.
Event warmup:

Ran about half mile. Did some strides and stretching. Swam for about 5 minutes prior to swim start.
Swim
  • 14m 46s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim is suppose to be 440 yards. Consensus from real swimmers based on times was that the course was 1/2 mile or maybe a bit more.
Pretty solid swim. Settled in after first 150 yards and felt comfortable the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

I was a little slow coming out of the water and getting up the beach.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Cold morning but just went with tri top. No long sleeves this time. Worked out fine.
What would you do differently?:

Some trouble getting feet in shoes as they were numb.
Bike
  • 45m 42s
  • 17 miles
  • 22.32 mile/hr
Comments:

Should have pushed a little harder on the way out. Really thought return would be more of a cross wind than true headwind. Tough return trip. AP236/NP239
What would you do differently?:

Need to just push harder in sprints on the bike. With this being 3rd race in 4 weeks I just didn't have any extra juice.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Some trouble getting into running shoes due to numbness in feet.
Run
  • 27m 29s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Wanted to average less than 7 min/mile so started with that in mind and was right at 7 min for first mile. Then picked it up some since I knew there would be a headwind on the way back. Splits: 7:00/6:52/6:59/6:54
What would you do differently?:

Pretty solid run for me
Post race
Warm down:

Never got around to cool down run. Visited with team mates and friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Unusually cool weather and wind didn't help but everyone had to deal with that. Probably some residual fatigue from racing 2 sprints and a HIM in 4 weeks. Satisfied with result

Event comments:

Always a good after party at the FloraBama. A little slow to get around to awards. Great day for Gulf Coast Tri Team placing 7 in the top 10!

Those are GREAT race times!!! Congratulations you did fantastic!

A sub 7 min mile. Four of them in a row!! That's the stuff dreams are made of!!

I watched the race and had a blast!! It was freezing, I bet the water was crazy cold! They pulled the first buoy in with 1/2 the racers still out there and one swimmer followed it diagonally in...

It was very sobering to watch the different racers. I doubt I will ever be in the top 10 of a race, but it did make me realize I want to be as prepared as possible. It is a sport where you see a wide range of abilities and preparedness.

Can you tell me where a young girl with blonds braids placed and how old she was? I was very impressed with her racing. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, I don't see race results up anywhere.

Thanks for the nice words. I believe the young lady you mentioned finished 35th overall. I have seen her at other races down at the Gulf. I believe she has a swimming background. Here are results:http://www.eventtiming.com/races/mullet132.txt

Good luck with your training. It takes time. Be consistent and have fun.

The young girl is Margaret Lloyd. She is my god daughter! Her background is swimming, she has been doing tri's since she was 5 years old and keeps getting faster.
