Subject: Getting past the registration flood for Boston 2014

I read that registration for Boston 2013 extended into 3 weeks, which is an unusually long amount of time for it to be open.

Since people who beat their qualification times get to register first, what are the chances of registration extending to people who just made their qualification times?  I expect interest in next year's race to be very high.  Are there enough people with qual minus 5 times to fully fill the race spots?

 thoughts?

I'd like to attempt a qualification for 2014, but that means running a marathon by mid/early september in order to be ready when registration first opens in mid september.  While I ran a half marathon in march (1:27:35), i have an oly tri on may 5th, and currently run only about 20 mi/week. so it seems like running a marathon in 3:10 by sep is a bit of a stretch.  if it doesnt seem likely, id just run one in nov, to extend my training time.

sigh, maybe im getting caught up in the whole sentimentality thing, but it would be nice to run 2014, as a show of solidarity.  my plan before all this was to try to qualify for 2015, and try a half iron in 2014.

Given your current mileage, it does sound like a bit of a stretch, unless you have sufficient run pedigree that you could target a BQ-5 relatively easily. What are your current run times?

Apart from the cancellation of NYCM due to the storm, the conditions for most other major marathons in the past few months have been pretty good. When coupled with the fact that Boston 2014 may attract additional attention, I'd guess that the sell out will come faster this year than last.

And, if it's any indication, we just heard that the Boston HM on memorial day weekend just had a ton of new applicants last week.

My wife and I registered for it a few months ago, and there were a couple thousand people running.  We just got an email last week saying that since last Monday the numbers have now gone over 8k.  It's going to be a MESS, but an awesome day.

I suspect that the number of people who now focus even more on BQing will greatly increase, and so it might well be just that much more difficult to get in next year's race.

No one can know for sure, but I think the smart money is on it being harder to BQ than it was this year (like THAT was easy!).

I am determined to run Boston one day now myself. Although, I know it will not happen in 2014, I have a lot of work to do to qualify, so I am shooting from 2015 or 2016!!

It will be interesting to see how they handle entries for next year.  As per the linked article, inquires are up 15-20 times per previous years.  It's hard to believe that many people would be able to make the qualifying standards.  At the same time, I would imagine there will  lots of runners who make the standard and will still be turned away just because of the numbers.
