Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, CLOSED! GROUP FOCUS: I am mainly a sprinter, but I have mentored all levels from Sprint distance to Ironman. I enjoy working with older athletes because I am proof that ANYONE can do this, but I also enjoy all age levels, newbies or experienced. NAME: Hildebeast / Hilde
FAMILY STATUS: Married for 29 years to my wonderful husband who has just taken up the sport! 2 grown children, 2 grandsons. I am an elementary music teacher (who is desperately ready for summer vacation!) I live in central Texas.
WEIGHTLOSS: 2013 is the year to get down to race weight... need to eat healthier and be smart about my fueling. My goal is to lose approximately 20 pounds. Somehow my body is happy being 20 pounds heavier than I want it to be, so it is definitely a struggle.
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU A GOOD BEAST?: Use the BT training logs, be consistent in your training, inspire others in the group and check in on our group forum to post questions and successes and such. So come join us! Become a BEAST!

Veteran 622 Roll Tide!! | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN Hello!!! I would love to join this group!! Real first name: Melody Age and gender: I am 47 & Female Where you live: The very rural and beautiful Evergreen, Alabama Family status: Married 24 years to a great guy who still isn't quit sure what triathlon is but is very supportive of me ;-) I have three sons: two grown & one athletic 15 year old; and 2 sweet grandsons 9 mo & 6yo Your previous triathlon experience: None really. I went and watched the Mullet Man Sprint in Orange Beach last month (and LOVED it!!) I have run a little here and there in the past because I knew I needed some cardio (hated cardio- love strength training), had not been on a bike in years, and although I grew up swimming and consider myself a good recreational swimmer, had never focused on it (free style) as a sport. I have always been very active. I was a stay at home mom for many years and then managed a small health food store where my schedule was more my own (to get a workout in). 3 years ago I went to work in the technology dept. of our public school system and suddenly I am working 7:30 -4:30 not able to figure out when/how to get a workout in consistently even though I knew I really needed to start focusing on some cardio. Training for a race has helped me accomplish that. I also really like the variety of focusing on three sports instead of one. Your goals for this season: To make it though sane & figure out three sports at the same time. I don't have anything specific for swim (except: do not drown/get eaten by a shark) & bike except to improve; but for my run (which is the most challenging of the three for me) I would like to work my way to a 9 minute mile (this fall, next year, not sure what is reasonable) & do a 10K by fall. My first sprint is on June 1. My goal for the race is to finish, and everyone keeps saying to make that my only goal, but I have a 'wish?' to finish in under 2 hours. It will be close if I do. It is 1/3 mile swim, 18 mi bike & 5k. I'm registered as a first timer. I could have registered in my age group or as an Athena (but only for 3 more lbs!!) and had much less competition but everyone said register for your first as a first timer so I listened :-) I hope to register for another sprint in the late summer/ fall, but I thought I would see how this one when first. Weight goals: I am 5' 7" was 171 when I started this in January and am 167 now which is ridiculous since I have been working my butt off and eating fairly clean, mostly whole food :-/ I am OK with my size for the most part, I am large boned and build muscle easily. Weight matters to me mostly because it is important to me to be healthy. I would love to weigh 150-155 but 160 is my goal for now.

Veteran 545 South Shore, MA | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN I'd love to be a part of this mentor group again if you'll take me back, Hilde! I joined another mentor group the last go around and I really missed all you crazies, so I'm back!!! Real first name: Kristen Age and gender: 39 y/o female Where you live: Hingham, MA (outside of Boston) Family status: Married for 9 years with 3 kids (ages 3, 5 and 7). My husband is as obsessed with golf as I am with triathlon, so it works out pretty well. He usually golfs on Saturdays and I usually race on Sundays! Your previous triathlon experience: This will be my 3rd season doing tris. I did 2 sprints in 2011 and caught the bug. I did 5 sprints last year (2012). Have done some 5Ks (several), 10Ks (2) and half marathons (3). Your goals for this season: My big goal this season is to complete an Oly in August. I also plan to do a couple of sprints throughout the season (only have officially registered for one so far), a 10K next week and another half marathon in Sept. So psyched to be a part of this awesome mentor group again!! Hilde's the BEST!!! And I have never been a part of a more motivating/inspiring group of BTers! |

Expert 1067 Douglaston, NY | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN Real first name: Shawn Age and gender: 36 (or 37 in triathlon years) and Male Where you live: (I promise not to come and stalk you!) Techincally, I live in New York City but it is eastern Queens right near the Nassau Border so not really Manhattan like most people envision. Family status: (ie married, kids, etc.) Married with a rambunctious 15 month old son Your previous triathlon experience: Oh gawd, don’t make me remember! I did several sprints over the course of two years starting a little over four years ago. For the past two years, I’ve had a lot of excuses (some legitimate and some decidedly not) come between me and training. Your goals for this season: I have three main goals, really. First, I need to finally figure out how to consistently train within the confines of my schedule. Second, I promised my wife I’d complete a 5k with near the beginning of August with her. She’s never run before AT ALL in the time that I’ve known her (over 13 years now) so this is momentous. My last goal is more personal. I have been sedentary for far too long. I just want to get moving again and complete a single sprint race before the end of the summer. Anything else you’d like to disclose: I’ve been in and out of Hilde’s groups several times now – to the point when where I wonder why she lets me come back. If anyone is one the fence when trying to decided to join a group, Hilde is definitely one of the most conscientious, enthusiastic, and committed mentors around. Her groups always seem like a chatty bunch and, from personal experience, I can tell you that no question is considered too simple/silly/stupid to ask. Edited by Sulcus 2013-05-06 1:34 PM |

Veteran 421 | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN Real first name: Andrea Age and gender: 43 and female Where you live: (I promise not to come and stalk you!): Connecticut Family status: (ie married, kids, etc.): Married with 8 year old son. Your previous triathlon experience: A few indoor tris Jan/Feb 2011 and 2012 (Where you do swim in pool for a given time, bike on spin/exercise bikes for a given time, run either on treadmill or indoor track. Distance is recorded for each portion and person with furthest distance gets 100 points then others get percentage score. 3 scores added together to find "winner") One women only sprint tri in Sept 2011 with a trail for run portion. One coed sprint tri in Aug 2012 which was held at 5PM on one of the most humid and hot days of the year. Your goals for this season: My goals are not really clear to me at this time. I'm always looking to lose weight and gain health. I enjoy mixing up my exercise. I haven't really loved racing. I'm considering my options. |

Veteran 192 Miles City, Montana | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN I would love to join a mentor group, and by the replies, I might just be crazy enough to fit in with this group of Beasts. Real first name: Janette Age and gender: Age 44 and female Where you live: (I promise not to come and stalk you!) I live in southeastern Montana. Yes, I just unleashed my bike from the indoor trainer one week ago. I have limitations with weather for winter training and I do not have a pool in any close proximity. But... I enjoy some beautiful scenery when the weather cooperates. Family status: (ie married, kids, etc.) I am married with 3 kiddos. Mother to 16 y.o. girl who has hit the angst of teenage time, 13 y.o. boy who is convinced that his mother's sole goal is to embarrass him, and a 6 y.o. who thinks his mother is superwoman! My family is supportive of my fitness efforts, but sometimes I do get a little push back when the training time eats into time they think I should be doing something for them. As a result, I train mostly very early in the morning. Your previous triathlon experience: I joined BT last winter and trained for a bike/run duo, a sprint tri and a half marathon last summer. I really enjoyed the accountability of BT and learned a ton from this site. I trained throughout the winter, but I fell off the training log habit for the last many months. Your goals for this season: My goal for this season is to improve on my swimming and compete in a sprint again. I would like to run another half marathon at the end of the summer. I would love to join a mentor group to keep myself focused, learn about others training paths and share the excitement of race preparations. |

New user 1 | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN I'm not sure if I'm an appropriate candidate for this (or any) group as I'm so incredibly out of shape and have a number of health problems that have made triathlon more of a dream than a reality for me. However, I am determined to do another triathlon. I do believe it will happen. Maybe not this year, but it WILL happen. Anyway, I could seriously use some cheerleading! Real first name: Jen Age and gender: 31 and female Where you live: (I promise not to come and stalk you!): Pennsylvania Family status: (ie married, kids, etc.): Committed relationship with my boyfriend of 2 years (no kids). Your previous triathlon experience: I got into triathlon initially because my friend who had gotten me into cycling had done some of them and triathlon seemed like the thing to do while recovering from a shoulder injury. I had no running experience prior to training for my first triathlon, but I grew up swimming and cycling. I completed a sprint in 2006 - totally loved it, loved the training, actually grew to love running. (Was first in my age group in the swim - woot!) Then there were a series of unfortunate events (illness, graduate school, chronic pain) and voila! I'm an out of shape version of my former self. I haven't gone for a run since 2008. I haven't ridden a bike since 2010, I think. I've been on a really restrictive diet because of the chronic pain issue for two years and since the end of last year, I've had to quit eating pretty much all carbs. I'm definitely not trying to lose weight - I'm more focused on eating enough to maintain (I've lost a good 15 pounds in the past year and I'm about 10 pounds under my normal, healthy, fit muscular 'set point'), especially as I become more active. Current state of affairs: I have something called high-tone pelvic floor dysfunction/painful bladder syndrome, which basically means my hip rotators and pelvic floor muscles are in spasm all the time and are pretty sore. It also has caused some pretty serious back pain and, in the past year, I've developed nerve pain in my face that's related to muscle spasms. All the pain is much better than it was a year ago (and I no longer have to pee every 20 minutes), so now I feel like I can 'risk' it and try to start actually being seriously active again. I've been told that cycling is one of the worst possible things I can do for my pelvic floor, but I've also been told it's not impossible. Running is similarly risky. Humbug! I am determined to return to a healthy lifestyle, chronic pain or no chronic pain and dietary restrictions or not. Currently, I am really stoked because I've been walking at least a mile every day - AND carrying a backpack! - and I've reached a point where it isn't increasing the symptoms anymore. Your goals for this season: I want to be active and strong and healthy again. So, for the coming season: Get back on a bike and back in the pool, work up to walking 30 min continuously every day by the end of May, and *think* about doing a 5k about 6 months from now. To that end, I want to start light strength training to rebuild some muscle. I am getting ready to tune up my road bike (I bought chain lube!), put it on the trainer, and start trying to ride for just 3 min a day to see if I can tolerate it. I also want to start a daily yoga practice. Related goals are to go back to physical therapy for my pelvis this summer, try some new treatment for the facial pain, and see a specialist about my knee problem (hurt it back in December but it's still goofy). The trick is to accomplish all this without causing a major pain flare or a bad migraine cycle. I fully admit to being anxious that I could cause a flare and end up as debilitated as I was at the beginning of all of this. It was truly, truly awful. So, I'll be the really slow turtle of the group if that's alright. Slow but steady. :D (Eventually, I want to do an Xterra race and an Oly, but that's a bit of a ways off!) Edited to add: I joined BT back in 2005, but have never posted on the forums. Hello! Edited by dubbs 2013-05-06 5:04 PM |

Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, OPEN Welcome Janette and Jen to the group! We take all levels of expertise here, so don't worry if you are total newb, after all, we ALL started there, right? Jen, you definitely sound like you have some health issues but I'm glad to see you want to work to overcome them! I had doctors tell me years ago I should never lift weights or run due to herniated disc problems, and guess what, I've had NO problems with that since I've been tri training. You just gotta be smart and know your limits, and when to back off. There's a difference between training pain and injury! I am just coming off a hiatus after dealing with melanoma surgery, luckily I had the best of outcomes and all is well. Sure put a kink in my race schedule though! I hope to be back to my former beastie self in another month or so. I love the sound of motivation!!!! |

The Mistake by the Lake a.k.a. Cleveland, OH Family status: (ie married, kids, etc.) I live with my boyfriend of 4 years and (every other weekend) his two boys, 7 & 11. Your previous triathlon experience: This will be my 3rd year. I did the "recommended progression" of all sprints (3) my first year, threw in an OLY in my second year (last year) along with 2 sprints, and will be shooting for my first HIM this fall. Like Hilde, swimming is my strong suit, I'm fair on the bike train and try not to let EVERYONE pass me on the run. Your goals for this season: I'd also like to add that I've waffled in and out of Hilde's training group a couple of times and am incredibly thankful that she's been SO supportive during the past 15 months while my crazy life tried to overwhelm me: left my job of 11 years, sold my home which I'd owned for 12 years, moved in with my boyfriend (and his kids!), dealt with a bed bug infestation (horrifying beyond words) and the recent death of my boyfriend's father. Very much looking forward to putting all this behind me and being BEASTLY this summer Edited by arquillo 2013-05-06 7:14 PM |

Two girls 3 and 5 Your previous triathlon experience: raced in a local try a tri event. Your goals for this season: signed up for Canada day sprint tri in Dryden. Maybe another sprint in Sioux Lookout. Possibly a late season race. Schedule and time permits. Goals to finish strong in each event. Improve my swimming which is a little diffcult as I'm an hour from a pool and ows are not going to happen for at least another 3-4 weeks. We still have 3 feet of ice in the bay. I've been logging good time on bike and run and trying to do strength training for back shoulders and chest. Another goal is to try and stay on track with my training which can be difficult working shift work but Its been good so far. Will race in a couple of local running events.
